STEREOTYPES IN SOCIETY
REMEMBER THE NORMS • Remember to keep the frame of mind that we are psychologists looking at the existing society, good and bad. • We can acknowledge what perspective we are coming from, but in the end, we leave our heated emotions at the door, and approach the problem as a scientific problem to be fixed with the scientific knowledge we have about this topic. • If you are offended or take a stereotype personal, that is okay. Just also acknowledge (out loud) why you do from a scientific point of view- most likely because you have experienced that stereotype against you. • Only respectful language will be used in discussion • If these norms are broken, individuals may be asked to leave the room and receive other consequences.
REDUCING EXISTING STEREOTYPES • Remember to keep the frame of mind that we are psychologists looking at the existing society, good and bad. We can acknowledge what perspective we are coming from, but in the end, we leave our heated emotions at the door, and approach the problem as a scientific problem to be fixed with the scientific knowledge we have about this topic. • Now that we have seen a list of just some of the stereotypes that exist…we are going to take the first step of trying to reduce these stereotypes. • With no more than one partner, design a program for our school that could begin to work on reducing stereotypes among the individuals at our school. Follow these guidelines: – Use realistic standards- money, resources, time, participation, etc. – Range in complexity- classes offered, flyers, daily or annual practices, take home activities, etc. – The stereotype that you are targeting/addressing should be one that is a genuine concern. Not taking this prompt seriously may result in a failing grade and/or additional consequences. • Create a program that uses scientifically/psychologically based theories on reducing stereotypes. Your project/program should include the following – A plan for teacher and student education on the dangers of prejudice: create a mock program/class or handout with this information – A plan for student take-home- activities, homework, flyers for what the students would take home. Create a mock outline for this. – Identify theories you are using- showing a scientific theory helps validate the method – Any other methods/activities/events/classes/etc. that would be helpful – Make this a program that could be adopted by the school- it just might be!
