STEREOTYPE SETBACKS Riya Patel, Hannah Leggat, and Ella White
Stereotypes ■ One of the main reasons why stereotypes are harmful is because they can lead to problems in decision making that carry the chance for negative consequences. ■ Stereotypes always put a group higher than another. ■ They seem to always demean a certain group too. ■ Stereotyping seems to be human nature and is almost inevitable, especially when others do it too.
Blondes Girls are dumb ■ This is one of the most commonly used stereotypes. ■ Movies like Legally Blonde show blondes can accomplish much more than people think. ■ In many motion picture movies, the blonde character always tries hard to gain attention since she can not gain it with her brain. ■ One of the most common influences on young girls is Barbie. ■ The move Toy Story 2 shows how Barbie only cares about fashion and her love life. However, the movie also shows that Barbie saved her friends because she came up with a genius idea.
To prove blondes are not dumb ■ Karen Nyberg is an astronaut and has a doctorate in mechanical engineering. She flew a Space Shuttle mission (STS-124) and later spent 166 days onboard the International Space Station, conducting experiments, as part of Expeditions 36/37. ■ Marissa Ann Mayer is the current President and CEO of Yahoo! since July 2012. Previously, she was a long-time executive and key spokesperson for Google. Mayer was ranked eighth on the list of America's most powerful businesswomen of 2013 by Fortune magazine. ■ There a million of powerful blonde women out there in out world. People just need to stop being ignorant and open their eyes to the world around them.
All Muslims are terrorists ■ Many people believe that all Muslims want to cause harm just because of an act done by a few people. ■ Its wrong to judge a whole group because of something only a small portion of them did. ■ For example, because of 9/11, ALL Muslims were thought to be dangerous. ■ However, there are millions of Muslims in our world that don’t agree with the actions of their fellow Muslims and only want to bring peace to the world. ■ There will always be those few people in every group that just want to hurt others. ■ Violent humans are know as, “Extremists. ” Though, Extremism is not only unique or only seen in Islamic communities.
Young people’s opinions don’t matter and they aren’t capable of making a change ■ Many people think that kids are naïve and don’t know anything other than what their parents tell them. ■ Adults call teens ignorant and rude for having their own opinions or thoughts on different topics. ■ Though, when you go online, most of the ignorant comments are from the adults. ■ People don’t think kids can make a difference, but there are kids all around the world that are stepping up to make a change right now. – An example is on Dosomething. org – Young people are creating organizations to help solve problems like giving clothes to the homeless or giving supplies to an animal shelter. ■ Kids are our future generation and people should learn to accept and respect their ideas, opinions, and each individual.
Young kids who are making a difference ■ A 13 year old boy, Blare Gooch, who lives in Michigan started collecting teddy bears to send to people in Haiti after they experienced a devastating earthquake. ■ Jackson Kelley, Age 11 and Kristan Kelley, Age 9 collected school supplies for kids who could not afford them. They started an organization and now collect over 300 backpacks a year. ■ Charlie Coons started donating fleece blankets to an orphanage after hearing a story about the cold nights there. She went on to create a group called HELP (Hope Encouragement Love Peace) and has established a group that sends over 700 blankets to more than 9 nations. These kids show age does not matter and its never to early to take a stand or start helping out.
Girls aren’t as strong or intelligent as guys ■ Since the beginning of time, girls have been inferior to guys. It started with women not being able to vote and them being known for taking care of kids, cooking, and housekeeping. ■ Nowadays, opinions have changed, but girls and boys are still not seen as equals. ■ The rule that boys are not allowed to hit girls, but girls can hit boys shows that people think girls are weaker and can’t take pain. However, some women spend up to 36 hours in labor while guys just sit there and watch. ■ There are many women out their saving people lives. For example, many girls are doctors, police officers, firefighters and more.
Examples. . . ■ Rosie the Riveter was an inspiration to women all across the world. She motivated girls to step up when the all the men weren’t there to do all the “tough” jobs during WW 2. Rosie is still talked about today as an iconic character for girls to look up to. ■ Sally Ride was an astronaut, scientist, physicist, educator, and the first American woman to go to space. She was the third overall person to travel to space after USSR and is still named the youngest American astronaut who has gone to space. ■ Lastly, Mother Teresa devoted her life to serve the poor and became a symbol of charitable work. With her hard work and selflessness, she went on to be rewarded with twinning the Nobel Peace Prize.
