Stephen Grover Cleveland The 22 nd president and the 24 th president of the United States of America

Early Life-the Beginning �Grover Cleveland was born on March 18, 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey. �He was the fifth out of nine children to be born. �His mother was Anne Neal Cleveland, and his father was Richard Falley Cleveland. �Cleveland’s dad died when Grover Cleveland was only sixteen. �Cleveland went to school until his father died. He never went to college. �His religion is Presbyterian.

Early Life-Work, Work �Grover Cleveland has had many jobs, including working as an assistant instructor at a blind school in New York, a clerk, a lawyer, a sheriff, a Governor, Mayor, and a United States President. �While Cleveland was a sheriff of Erie County, New York, he was also the public executioner and he hung two murderers.

Scandal! �While Cleveland was still campaigning to become president, word got out that he had an affair with a lady named Maria Haplin in 1874, and to make it worse, Maria had just gotten married! �Haplin claimed that he was the father of her first child, and while Cleveland had admitted to having the affair, he denied the child was his. �The Republicans made fun of Cleveland by chanting, “Ma, Where is Pa? Off to the White House, Ha, Ha!!!”

President-First Term �Grover Cleveland was the 22 nd president as well as the 24 th president. � His first term was from 1885 through 1889. �Cleveland refused to give pensions to hundreds of Civil War veterans who were lying about having injuries from war.

First Term (Continued) �In 1886 Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty in New York. �Toward the end of his first term, Congress wanted to pass a tariff that Cleveland opposed, and his opposition later cost Cleveland the next presidential election. �Cleveland convinced Congress to repeal the Tenure of Office Act so that he could replace officials who had been previously appointed without having to wait for their terms end.

President-Love Life �While he was in office during his first term, Cleveland married Frances Folsom on June 2, 1886. �He and his wife had five children, two boys and three daughters.

President-Second Term �His second term lasted from 1893 through 1897. �The U. S. had just entered a severe economic depression when Cleveland reentered office. �Cleveland thought the cause was the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890, so he had Congress overturn the act. He lost many Democratic supporters because of his decision, and the economy only got worse.

nd President-2 Term-STRIKE!!! �In 1894 Strikes broke out everywhere, and in Chicago one of the worst strikes occurred. �The owner of a large railroad company named Pullman lowered the wages his workers received and his workers went on strike in retaliation, which shut down the railroad system across the country. �Cleveland got mad and sent the federal troops to put a stop to the nonsense. �Twelve men died. Hundreds were injured. �Cleveland was no longer a hero in the working people’s eyes.

President-The second Term �Threatened war with Britain over a boundary dispute between Venezuela and Britain. �Hawaii’s Queen lost her power, so Stanford Dole (new leader) asked the U. S. to take over Hawaii. �Cleveland refused, saying that he thought it’d be unfair to the Hawaiians. �At the end of Cleveland’s second term, the country was pratically broke. �Cleveland lost all of his support and didn’t run again.

Retirement �When Cleveland retired, he felt both relieved and disgraced. �He moved to Princeton, New Jersey, where he lived the rest of his life. �He gave up public life. �He worked at Princeton University. �Ruth (1 st daughter) died at age twelve in 1904 from dipheria.

Retirement �Grover Cleveland died on June 24 th, 1908. �He had a heart failure that killed him. �His last words were, “I have tried so hard to do right. ” �He was buried in the Princeton Cemetery. �Many American’s hated Cleveland when he left office, but over time many remembered him as a good public servant.

Interesting Facts �Cleveland was the first president to get married in the White House. �Cleveland’s wife was 27 years younger than him. �Grover Cleveland Alexander (a famous baseball player in the first half of the 20 th century) was named after Grover Cleveland, the president, who was serving his first term at the time of Grover Cleveland Alexander’s birth.

More Interesting Facts �In 1893 Grover Cleveland got a cancerous growth on the roof of his mouth. To avoid any panic, Cleveland several skilled doctors snuck aboard a boat and removed the growth in secret. The official story was that he went on a fishing trip, and truth didn’t come out until 1917. �Cleveland’s motto was, “A public office is a public trust. ” �Cleveland had several nicknames, including “Veto Mayor” and “Veto President” because he vetoed a record holding 584 bills. �Also called “Big Steve”, and “Uncle Jumbo”. �First Democrat elected since the Civil War.

Yet More Interesting Facts �Grover Cleveland was a Democrat. �Cleveland’s presidential salary was $50, 000 per year. �He was the only president to serve two nonconsecutive terms. �Cleveland’s home state is New York. �His vice presidents were Thomas A. Hendricks and Adlai E. Stevenson. �In 1863 Cleveland paid a Polish immigrant to take his place in the army during Civil War so he could stay home with his family.
