Presenters Aziza Force- Grade 1 Samantha Maidenberg- Grade 2 Shannon Lynch- Grade 3 Christen Veach- Grade 5 Vivian Birdsall- Grades 7 -8 Melinda Meyer- K-8 Science Coordinator Jim Zambarano- 9 -12 CTE Department Chair
Tonight’s presentation will: ● Identify the structure of the K-8 STEM program ○ Integration ○ Computer Science Pathway ● Take a closer look at the computer science pathway ● Observe student learning in action ● Explain the purposeful design for sustainability
District Goals GOAL 1. Increase student learning as measured by multiple and varied assessment to assure all students graduate prepared for a dynamic and complex global society Objective 3 -Monitor the alignment between new national and state frameworks in science, technology, engineering, and math and local STEM initiatives. a. Integrate the newly developed K-12 STEM framework into the appropriate disciplines and grade levels. b. Implement STEM programs K-8 and continue to research new opportunities at the high school.

Integrated Approach
Integrated Approach to STEM in New Canaan Embedded STEM opportunities in our K 12 core curriculum Extension and Enrichment Opportunities
Integrating STEM to Understand Real- World Phenomena Performance Expectation: Design a School Butterfly Garden: Conduct tests for soil nutrients and water retention. Record hours of sunlight and average wind speed. Measure and mark a square foot grid to calculate the perimeter and area of the garden. Research butterfly life cycle and plant needs. Design watering system Present information. Select plants adapted for site conditions…

Sample Standards 3 -5 -ETS 1 -1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost. 3 -5 -ETS 1 -2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. 3 -5 -ETS 1 -3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
Computer Science Pathway: The Design Process
Observe the learning in action While viewing this video consider: How was the classroom environment designed? How were students engaged in the scientific, mathematical and engineering practices? How are students developing and applying 21 st century learning and innovation skills?
In the computer science pathway, students…. Follow a defined learning progression from one grade level to the next Learn concepts that can be transferred Follow the design process to explore creative solutions to problems. Develop and use models, engage in argument, and re-design based on new information or questions. Demonstrate creativity and innovation Ability to problem solve Communicate their ideas and understandings
