What is a Stroke? A Stroke is when vein in the brain or if there is a blood clot in the brain. It doesn’t cause permanent damage. This cause’s many brain cells to die. This is because the part of the brain that is being cut off from the blood and can’t get the nutrients from the blood.
What are Side Effects of Strokes? Strokes have consequences on the body after and during the stroke. After a stroke you could become paralyzed, it could just be an arm, or a leg, but it could also be a whole side of your body. During the stroke your speech could be hard to get a sentence together. Stroke victims have said that they know what they want to say but they just can't get it out. There are many other side effects such as Vision problems, Pain, Hard time swallowing, Tired easily, Bursts of Emotion, and Depression. Those are all common side effects of a stroke.
Could Stem Cells Prevent Strokes? A study by Stanford university where they took in Stroke patients who had a stroke between 3 years and 6 months before the procedure and did a procedure with stem cells. The procedure put the patients under anesthesia but staying conscious, They drilled a small hole in the patients skull and injected adult stem cells that were slightly changed. Everyone of the patients had then gone home the next day. Almost all of them said that they had headaches none of them had anymore side effects from the procedure. One women had said that after her stroke she couldn’t move her right arm and leg the same as before, but after the procedure it had given movement back to her right arm and leg.
Our Idea We talked to Charis and Connor's Dad about strokes. The experience has grown my knowledge of strokes and stem cells. We where thinking if their was a way to predict when a stroke was about to happen. If they was a way of seeing effects before the stroke will take place. If this could be figured out then the procedure would take place and the stroke could be prevented.
Our proposal We first researched what strokes were and what side effect it has. We talked to Charis the stem cell researcher. This experience was great, talking to Charis and her answering our questions directly. The answers to the questions that we asked are in the next slide.
Question for Skype Chat • Are stem cells being researched further in preventing strokes? Yes just like every other serious disease/condition but it may be years before we find a cure that works. • Is their a way for stem cells to help people who had a stroke? Yes, but it is still being researched further.
