Rack and Pinion �The steering wheel turns the pinion gear, which slides the rack back and forth. �The tie rods are connected to the outboard ends of the rack gear and move the steering arms.

Rack and Pinion �Advantages: Lighter, simpler, cheaper to manufacture, and maintain, gives better road feel, and control than parallelogram steering. �Disadvantage: More road shock is transferred to the steering wheel.

Steering Ratio �Faster steering ratios give quicker movement of the front wheels for greater control, but have higher steering effort. �Fewer turns of the steering wheel, lock to lock, means faster steering ratio.
