STC-Report n EUMETNET-SRNWP p COSMO will contribute to the Interoperability Project o MCH and DWD will participate for COSMO with the following deliverables: o D 1: A report documenting the standard output format o D 2: A Documentation describing the requirements and specification for the adaptor software (software tools for conversion between different data formats and model grids; o D 3: 2 -way adaptors that transform the output from COSMO to the standard output format and vice versa. o D 4: Enhancements to existing software tools that enable COSMO to process data from the four Global Model p MCH the only country to join the Verification project COSMO – 09/2007
STC-Report n Reporting and planning cycle p Has been introduced during the last COSMO year p Not all reports and planning documents available in time o We have to do better p But: Planing will be revised and shifted by 2 months o Room for optimization o Marco to report on that later n Priority Tasks have been introduced p Consolidation of cumulus convection scheme (former UTCS (v)) p Consolidation/unification of diagnostic postprocessing COSMO – 09/2007
STC-Report n Priority Projects p Kenda o Finally staffing for permanent post at DWD successful p UTCS o Resource problems seem to be sorted out o Additional contributions from HMC, MCH, HNMS and DWD n 4 new priority projects have been approved p COLOBOC: Consolidaion of lower boundary conditions p CONSENS: Consolidation of COSMO-Ensemble o BUs needed to run LEPS and SREPS will be provided by COSMO-partners that are members of ECMWF p Sat-Cloud: Assimilation of Satellite Data with Clouds and Over Land p Versus 2 o Split into 2 phases o USAM will provide resources to compensate for Angela Celozzis matarnity leave p CDC Conservative dynamical core o New expert team on dynamics set-up at IMGW o Need to proceed in 2 branches o Further refinement of planning needed COSMO – 09/2007

Deutscher Wetterdienst Strategy Titel n Focus on short range and very short range forecasts n Leading role in modelling and data assimilation on the convection permitting scale n The NWP system should lead to p A measurable decline in erroneous predictions p An enhanced forecasts of “high impact” weather p A valuation of the reliability of the forecasts n This results in p Local scale ensemble forecasting system p Global forecasting system that must be expanded into an ensemble prediction system providing the necessary BCs on the regional scale p Maximum use of remote sensing data COSMO – 09/2007
Deutscher Wetterdienst Strategy n Cooperation with Academia p Strategy calls for a close co-operation with universities and research institutes p Extramural research o Application-based research supported directly by DWD o Proposals must be related to operational weather forecasting p Ertl Center for Atmosphere and Climate Research o Initial phase (first 4 -12 years) funded by Ministry of Transport o Will support several groups of researchers to establish competence clusters o Topics o Dynamics of the Atmosphere and Predictability o Data Assimilation o Model Development o Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics o Optimal usage of Information from Weather Forecasting and climate simulation (Societal and Economic Applications Research) COSMO – 09/2007
Deutscher Wetterdienst Achievements over the last COSMO year n 3 D-VAR was finally made operational yesterday! n New diagnostics for 2 m-Temperature (EU+DE), Enhanced Tiedtke cumulus convection scheme (EU), Tuning of turbulence scheme (DE), 2 -timelevel Runge-Kutta dynamics(EU), Work on SSO scheme for (EU) n A lot of work done in the context of the new super-computer system p IBM -> NEC, move from BUFR-input to Net. CDF, new observational database Sky COSMO – 09/2007
Deutscher Wetterdienst Status of the NWP-system n GME p Runs at 00, 06, 12, and 18 UTC up to 168 h p 40 km, 368642*40 levels n COSMO-EU p Runs at 00, 06, 12, and 18 UTC up to 78 h p 7 km, 665*657 * 40 levels n COSMO-DE p Runs at 00, 03, 06, 09, 12, 15, 18, 21 UTC up to 21 h p 2, 8 km, 421*461 * 50 levels COSMO – 09/2007
