Status Update Jianping Chen JLab So LID Collaboration
Status Update Jian-ping Chen, JLab So. LID Collaboration Meeting June 29 -30, 2017
Overview Progress Since Last Meeting (March 2017) • Meeting with Stuart in mid May: very supportive • Submitted Updated p. CDR Completed iterations with Rolf/Thia on the responses to the Director’s Review recommendations (36). Submitted to Stuart/Bob end of May. Following Bob’s suggestion, added summary sentences to each response. Submitted on Tuesday. Bob already talked to the chair of the review committee. Plan to have mail review. Following Rolf’s suggestion, plan to make the p. CDR be ready for DOE in 2 weeks (by the time of DOE S&T review of JLab). JLab will submit a request to DOE for a DOE Science Review after the Director’s Review committee complete their mail review and all issues addressed. Hope to have the Science Review late this year. § Schedule, budget and pre-R&D Try to keep same schedule: DOE budget briefing 2/2018, starts in FY 2020 Uncertainty in DOE budget. Business as usual for now Need more detailed prioritization: prepare for small amount of pre-R&D becoming available Suggestion from JLab: Consider applying for funding from NSF as well Mid-size $ 4 M-15 M MRI < $ 4 M
FY 2018 Impacts Tim Hallman Medium Energy: • Continuous Electron Beam Facility (Scientific User Facility) operates at 10 weeks (28. 7% utilization) • No CEBAF capital equipment, accelerator improvement project, facility accelerator R&D or general purpose plant funding provided to Jlab • Up to 100 FTE reduction-in-force at Jlab • No initiation of the Moller MIE, which received Critical Decision 0 approval in 12/16. • No medium energy experimental program at FNAL • No RHIC Spin Program • No MIT Research and Engineering Center (University Center of Excellence) • Remaining research reduced 24. 5% JLab User Meeting June 19, 2017 3
