Focus: INCLUSIVE EDUCATION § Inclusion is a broader concept that covers all kind of intentional and no international marginalization (not just disability) § In 2012 the ministry expanded the mandate of IE Unit’s from focusing in disability to broader inclusion which include a focus on gender, poverty, HIV/AIDs, chronic illnesses, corporal punishment, teenage pregnancies and other issues arising from marginalization of children and communities as well as life skills • This presentation will focus on Children with Disability 3
Achievements ü 151 schools is implementing inclusive education ü The Zanzibar Education Policy is inclusive ü Development of Inclusive Education Policy (draft) ü Focal points from various Mo. EVT departments have been appointed and introduced to IE ü The inspectorate has been involved in the IE training ü The Diploma in Primary Education course curriculum reviewed to include IE issues. ü Increased number of learners with special educational needs enrolled in education institutions 4
Achievements ü Certificate course on Inclusive Education has been established at Zanzibar Muslim Academy (CCK). ü Diploma course on Inclusive and Special Needs Education has been established at State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) ü Mo. EVT has Adopted the use of Teacher Centre Advisors, and others from SUZA, Madrassa Resource Centre and CCK to support implementation of IE pre-service and in-service training in their respective cluster schools and institutions 5

THE WAY FOWARD Mo. EVT in Collaboration with other stakeholders such as GPE and UNICEF will implement the following activities: v. To finalize, disseminate and implement the overarching Inclusive Education policy that reaches all marginalized children and embeds IE principles in all Mo. EVT activities and services v. Adjustments to school infrastructure to accommodate students with disabilities. v. Reform of the pre-service teacher curriculum and training delivery to include inclusive education v.
