Writing a statistical report Before attempting to write a report based on statistics, the student must be able to interprete the information conveyed in the particular graphic of statistics. . This information is expressed usually in figures which are tabulated and arranged as a bar graph, table, line graph or pie chart. The reader must deduce from the figures important trends (general and particular) which will lead to a meaningful interpretation of the statistics.

WHAT IS A TREND? A trend is an upward of downward shift in data set over time. The following words can be used to describe the movement: decline drop rocket fall rise fluctuate stabilise decrease improve jump plummet increase Level off recover gain lose

In writing reports based on statistical tables, the following essentials must be observed: ❏ The report must be factual, accurate and objective ❏ There must be a logical arrangement of the facts ❏ All personal references, reasons, , explanations an dbiases must be avoided ❏ Speculations or opinions not ased on evidence must be avoided

The following guidelines will assist you in the reading of the statistics: ❏ Examine the overall trends in each year and in each category ❏ Attempt to show the important differences in categories over the specified period ❏ Note any significant increase or decrease or marked fluctuations ❏ Attempt to find a discernible pattern in the data over the specified period ❏ Mark any significant comparison or contrast in the data ❏ Classify related categories if it is neccessary to do so ❏ Explain interesting conclusions and trends in the data

The overall trends for each country of origin over the specified period The overall trends in each year of the specified period The highest and lowest numbers overall

You will arrive at the following conclusions: ❏ The period covered by the table is five years ❏ Tourists came from three countries: Barbados, England Canada ❏ The highest number of tourists came from England, then Canada then the least came from Barbados. ❏ Barbados and England showed a similarity in the pattern over the specified period - an increase in the second year, a decline in the third year and a steady increase in the fourth and fifth years. ❏ Tourists coming from Canada showed a decline in the second year, a rise in the third year, a decline in the fourth year and a rise in the fifth year. ❏ Both Barbados and England recorded the highest number of tourist entering the country. The lowest number of tourist entering the country was recorded in 1980. ❏ The pattern in the total numbers over the specified period 1978 -1982 reveald a rise in the second year, a decline in the third year and stady rise in the fourith and fifth years. ❏ The highest number of tourists in any particular year occurred in 1982 and the country of origin was England. ❏ The number was three times that of the number arriving from Barbados. . The number in the year 1982 among the three countries was in the ratio 1: 3: 2.
