WIGOS station identifiers § § § WHY do we need station identifiers? WHAT is proposed? WHO is involved?

Why do we need station identifiers? § § § To link observations and their metadata § Time series § Systematic errors § Avoid transmission of unchanging information World Weather Watch § IIiii – have run out Non-WWW § How refer to “partner” systems? A 1 bwnbnbnb** IA. . . IA I 6 I 6 I 6

What is proposed? Principles § No implicit meaning in station identifiers § All contributing observations must have station identifier § Unique – no station identifier refers to more than one station/platform § Applicable to all observing systems operated by anyone § Extensible – so do not need to issue new identifiers if system needs to be expanded § Absorb existing systems for identifiers

Proposed structure – WIGOS Station Identifier Component Role Initial Range (? ) WIGOS Identifier Series Allows future expansion 0 -3 Issuer of identifier Allow delegation of issuing identifiers 0 -1023 Issue number Sub-delegation, or absorb historic ids 0 -1023 Local Identifier Number for WIGOS 0 -999, 999 Mixed for imported 10 characters

Examples – “import” WWW identifiers Example WIGOS Id Issuer of Issue Local Series Identifier Number Identifier Land, SI=0 0 -0 -0 -60351 0 0 0 60351 U/air, SI=0 0 -1 -0 -57816 0 1 0 57816 Buoy 0 -2 -5 -5900191 0 2 5 5900191 Ship 0 -4 -0 -XY 123 AB 0 4 0 XY 123 AB

Examples – new identifiers Example WIGOS Issuer of Issue Local Id Series Identifier Number Identifier UK station 0 -619 -3 -1234546 0 619 3 123456 Canada 0 -530 -1 -02536 0 530 1 03536 ? CTBTO? 0 -891 -0 -WIEN 0 801 0 WIEN

Who is involved? § § Secretariat – transfer WWW into system Operators – provide WIGOS observation metadata for each registered station § Permanent Representatives – issue (and record in WIGOS metadata “index”) § Perhaps (for discussion by ICG-WIGOS) § Approved international operators (eg CTBTO) § Self-registration of amateurs (eg Met Office Wo. W) § Self-registration of other operators

Summary § Single system of station identifiers § Unique § Can absorb existing systems § “meaningless” § Extensible § Can § Delegate issuing numbers § Who can issue numbers?
