LAWDS (Libraries Activating Workforce Development Skills) Grant $244, 999 grant awarded from IMLS A statewide collaboration between: Public libraries SRLAAW WWDA (Wisconsin Workforce Development Association) DWD (Department of Workforce Development) WLA (Wisconsin Library Association) DPI (Department of Public Instruction) UW-System WTCS (Wisconsin Technical College System) GLETA (Great Lakes Education Training Association) The Project Manager for the grant is Martha Berninger from DPI
Grant Purpose Provide library staff training in the basics of workforce development To understand the workforce development system and how it works in Wisconsin To learn about job seeker tools – career exploration, unemployment insurance, job searching, and job services Establish a “Library Mentor Network” to create lasting relationships between libraries and the workforce development system Create connections between member libraries and the job centers Provide member libraries with a go-to person to work with in the workforce development system
Three-Year Project Timeline Year 1 – October 2018 – September 2019 Year 2 – October 2019 – September 2020 Year 3 – October 2020 – September 2021
Year 1 – October 2018 – September 2019 Form a Project Advisory Council (representatives from the partners) Begin to set up “Library Mentor Network” Member libraries and DWD will meet each other to start forming relationships July-September – An introduction to workforce development system is provided
Year 2 – October 2019 – September 2020 DPI will hire a Project Coordinator to develop training Assess the first year January – March – Training about career and resume tools is provided July-September – Training about unemployment insurance is provided
Year 3 – October 2020 – September 2021 Continue training Assess the effectiveness of the training January – March – Training about the Job Center of Wisconsin and Labor Market Research tools is provided Gather feedback and revise training as needed Assess the grant
Next Steps Project Advisory Council will meet April 24 Member libraries and DWD can start to schedule meetings late Spring-Summer
