States of consciousness • Enables us to evaluate the enviroment and filter information through the mind whiloe being aware of the occurrence of this complex process • William james referred to consciouness as the stream of thought • Robert Sternberg referred to it as mental reality
Continued • It serves as two important function: – Responsible for monitoring or keeping track of ourselves, enviroment, n relationships – Serves as a controlling role, planning our responses to the information gathered by monitoring. We find ourselves as full conscious, but there are lower levels of consciousness
Preconscious level • Contains info that is available to consciousness but that is not always in consciousness – Retrieved when needed – This area keeps the behaviors you don’t need any thought – Example: to ride a bike
Subliminal perception • This is a form of preconscious processing that occurs when we are presented with stimuli so rapidly that we are not consciously aware of them. – Example: if you playback a cd you can hear other words in it.
Subconscious or unconscious level • This stores all the thoughts that is too diffcult to deal with • This process makes people anious from consciousness to the unconscious called repression. • Occasionaly they slip out which are called Freudian slips – Come out in dream or words, grammar.
Continued… • Consciousness exit in a continum. • Controlled processing, where we are very aware of what we are doing • Automatic processing, where we performing tasks mechanically. Brushing you teeth – Then comes through sleep or daydreaming then at far end comes to a coma or unconsciousness
Sleep and dreaming • Sleep is an altered state. • Melatonin is in relationship with sleep as a chemical that controls sleep. • Halluncinations can begin after a 3 rd cycle of no sleep and then illusion come at 4 th cycle of no sleep
