Ralph Waldo Emerson 1803 -1882 • In the 1830 s Emerson gave lectures that he afterward published in essay form and became known as the central figure of his literary and philosophical group, now known as the American Transcendentalists. • These writers shared a key belief that each individual could transcend, or move beyond, the physical world of the senses into deeper spiritual experience through free will and intuition. • He published two volumes of essays in 1841 and 1844. Some of the essays, including “Self. Reliance, ” “Friendship” and “Experience, ” number among his best-known works.

Self-Reliance – The Poem • The essays, including “Self Reliance, ” were published in 1841. • Some of the ideas included in those essays date back as far as 1832, where they were found in Emerson’s journals, and lectures he delivered from 1836 -1839. • The poem, in the form we will see today, actually came from two separate journal entries; as seen in the text itself, from 1832 and 1833.
