Written Assessment - Body • Today we will be discussing the body of your paper, which is broken down into three distinct sections. • Next week, we will focus on the writing of these paragraphs, followed by a peer review/edit of all three. • Open your Chromebooks and open up the document titled “Body Worksheet. ”

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 1 • Discuss, using specific examples from at least

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 1 • Discuss, using specific examples from at least three different acts, how Shakespeare develops this theme throughout the course of the play. • Where and when do we see this theme first introduced? • What would you say is the strongest example of this theme shown in the play? Give specific examples and quotes from those acts to support this.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 1 • Step 1 – Transition into this paragraph

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 1 • Step 1 – Transition into this paragraph by discussing where and when we see this theme first introduced? – Example: The theme of deception is first introduced in the first scene of the Induction. We see it in the plan developed by the Lord to trick Christopher Sly. In Scene 1, he says, “What think you: if he were conveyed to bed, wrapped in sweet clothes, rings put upon his fingers, a most delicious banquet by his bed, and brave attendants near him when he wakes, would not the beggar then forget himself? ” (Crowther. I. 1. 33). Note: Quote from the ORIGINAL SHAKESPEAREAN TEXT.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 1 • Step 2 – Discuss what you would

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 1 • Step 2 – Discuss what you would say are the strongest examples of this theme shown in the play, giving quotes or examples from at least three different acts. – Example: The strongest example of this theme of deception is given through the constant changing of the characters’ roles. Tranio suggests deception early in Act 1 when he speaks to Lucentio about pretending to be a schoolmaster and offering to teach Bianca (Crowther. 1. 1. 85). Note: Paraphrases/summaries must still be cited.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 1 • My example is just ONE. Your paragraph

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 1 • My example is just ONE. Your paragraph MUST include at least THREE examples or quotes from THREE DIFFERENT ACTS. • You are not limited to just one character or set of characters here. Use ALL of the characters and situations you can find in the play to show theme developed.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 1 • Step 3 – Transition out of this

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 1 • Step 3 – Transition out of this paragraph into the next one smoothly. – Example: It is clear that Shakespeare meant to present deception as one of the major themes of this play. Some of the characters Shakespeare created show strong examples of this theme throughout the play.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 2 • Step 1 – Transition into this paragraph

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 2 • Step 1 – Transition into this paragraph by reminding the reader which characters you plan to focus on in this paragraph. – Example: One set of characters who exemplify theme of motivation are the men who want to marry Bianca. Each of them is motivated by their own reasons for wanting to marry her.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 2 • Step 2 – Describe how that character

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 2 • Step 2 – Describe how that character or set of characters show this theme through their speech and/or actions? Give specific examples/quotes from at least three different acts that show this character or set of characters as an example of this theme. – Example: Lucentio expresses his motivation when he says, “O Tranio, till I found it to be true, I never thought it possible or likely. But see, while idly I stood looking on, I found the effect of love in idleness” (Crowther. 1. 1. 143). His motivation, he tells the audience, is love.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 2 • Again, this is just ONE example. Your

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 2 • Again, this is just ONE example. Your second body paragraph will need to include at least THREE examples from THREE DIFFERENT ACTS. • This will fill up the majority of your second paragraph.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 2 • Step 3 – Transition out of this

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 2 • Step 3 – Transition out of this paragraph and into the next smoothly. – Example: Shakespeare is not the only writer who has used this theme as a focus in writing. There are many examples of it seen in modern media as well.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 3 • Step 1 – Transition into this paragraph

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 3 • Step 1 – Transition into this paragraph by reminding the reader of the modern media example you have chosen. – Example: One example of theme of deception in modern media is found in the movie, “Now You See Me. ” This movie is about magicians who attempt to deceive people throughout the entire film.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 3 • Step 2 – Discuss how the writer

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 3 • Step 2 – Discuss how the writer introduces theme in your example. – Example: This theme is introduced in the very first scene of the movie which focuses on a magician performing a trick in front of an audience. One of the characters even says it, “What is magic? Focused deception. But deception meant to entertain” (Now You See Me). • Step 3 – Discuss how theme is developed throughout your example. – Example: Over the entire length of the film, the levels of deception that are revealed become more and more complex leading up to the big twist ending.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 3 • Step 4 – Compare and contrast Shakespeare’s

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 3 • Step 4 – Compare and contrast Shakespeare’s treatment of theme with that of your modern example. – In the play, the deception Shakespeare presents is mainly in the form of people pretending to be what they are not. In “Now You See Me, ” the deception is more about making people see something that isn’t really there. In both; however, deception is used to distract. NOTE: This is just ONE example. Your paper should include at least TWO WAYS the play and your example are the same AND TWO WAYS they are different.

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 3 • Step 5 – Transition out of the

Written Assessment – Body Paragraph 3 • Step 5 – Transition out of the body of your essay and into the conclusion. – Example: As has been noted, theme of deception is one that can be found in Shakespeare and in modern media. It is a universal theme.
