Lesson Objectives • To know which foods are available in each season and plan a meal based on seasonal foods • All must research to know at least 4 foods for each season • Most should produce a detailed seasonal eating chart and begin the planning of their meal • Some could use their knowledge and research to plan their seasonal meal and justify their food choices of their meal

What are seasonal foods? Seasonal food is the time of year when food is at its best, in terms of flavour or harvest. Many foods are available all year, as they are imported from other countries. When local seasonal food is available it tends to be fresher and cheaper - there has been less travel/storage from farm to fork.

WHY EAT THE SEASONS? There a number of good reasons to eat more local, seasonal food: • to reduce the energy (and associated CO 2 emissions) needed to grow and transport the food we eat to avoid paying a premium for food that is scarcer or has travelled a long way • to support the local economy • to reconnect with nature's cycles and the passing of time But most importantly, • seasonal food is fresher and so tends to be tastier and more nutritious

Why seasonal food? § Foods are usually harvested when they are at their peak and typically have the most flavour and nutrients, so the food tends to be tastier, healthier and better for the environment. § Take a look at the seasons to see when different foods are at their best. § Eat seasonal foods.

Designing Task • Use the knowledge you have acquired during today’s lesson to plan a meal for a celebrity based on seasonal food. The dish must reflect their personality or their job eg. Matt Baker grew up on a sheep farm so I will cook lamb and sweet potato as they are in season. • Homework for next lesson – Choose a celebrity and research it (at least 10 bullet points). Then choose 4 dishes that would be suitable. • Next lesson, you will plan your seasonal meal. You must justify the use of your ingredients for both seasonality and celebrity.
