Our Lenten Prayer We pray for all members of our global family; that we may be filled with hope for the future and inspired to work together to help all communities to survive and thrive. Amen
L 5 The Work of SCIAF Learning Intentions: I am learning about SCIAF’s work and how I can contribute to creating a better world. Success Criteria: I can: • consider the importance of an informed conscience and describe how this affects my response and the response of others to moral issues. • consider my response to natural disasters, war and the plight of others
Today we will be reading some of SCIAF’s document ‘Taking Care of Business’ • “Poverty and hunger don’t just happen by accident; they are man-made injustices. People are kept hungry, powerless and locked in poverty by global rules, practices and behaviours that only benefit the few. It doesn’t have to be this way” • Joanne O’Neill – Taking Care of Business
The Work of SCIAF • Unjust business practices are pushing people into or further into poverty. • SCIAF works in solidarity with those living in poverty and acts as a voice for justice; challenging the practices and behaviours that cause poverty and hunger in the first place.
Mapping From Memory Task A couple of copies of an extract from the document ‘Taking Care of Business’ by SCIAF will be stuck to the board at the front of the class. In groups, number yourselves 1 -4. When the teacher calls your number, you are to run up to the board and read the information. When the teacher calls another number, you must sit down and help your group to answer the questions on the following slide. The first group to answer all the questions wins.
1. As well as responding to the effects of poverty on the ground, what else does SCIAF do? 2. What does SCIAF say we must do in order to build a more equal world? 3. What contribution can business make to tackling global poverty? 4. What does the Social teaching of the Catholic Church suggest should be at the heart of our policy making? 5. What does SCIAF mean by saying ‘our understanding of economics and the place of the market must be shifted”? 6. What do SCIAF want to see as their first step? 7. Is SCIAF, in their opinion, anti-business? 8. What do your group think about SCIAF’s approach?
The Work of SCIAF • SCIAF writes reports like the one ‘taking care of business’ which you can read online. • It collates research and makes recommendations for governments and businesses to follow. These include: • The UK Government should require all large companies to implement human rights due diligence processes in accordance with UN Guiding Principles • All large companies, listed and non-listed should be required to report on their social, environmental and human rights impacts and risks, and the steps they are taking to mitigate these, throughout their operations and supply chains. This should be backed up by clear guidance and robust monitoring
SCIAF – Our Lenten Charity • As well as producing reports like ‘Taking Care of Business’, SCIAF help people in many ways. • We are now going to watch SCIAF’s 2019 Wee Box Appeal videos. • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=f.
