Input: Whole numbers The first (left) digit in a number is the largest value and the last (right) digit in a number is the smallest value. After every whole number, there is a decimal point. This lets us know what the place value of digit is. WALT: identify 1000 s, 10 s and 1 s. This means that we are finding the different place values in numbers up to thousands. Decimal numbers
To identify the different place values in numbers, we can use a place value chart to separate them. When our number is in the place value chart, we can easily see how many thousands, hundreds, tens and ones there are. 2 5 8 3. If we do not use a place Value chart, we need to count the number of digits in the number. The digit to the left of the decimal point is always the ones. As you go to the left, the place values increase. It starts from ones, tens, hundreds and thousands. 2 thousands 5 hundreds 8 tens 3 ones 2 5 8 3
To the right, we have a place value chart to help us with identifying the place value of our number. Our number is 2583. When we write the number in the place value chart, we can see that we have ‘ 2 thousands, 5 hundreds, 8 tens and 3 ones. Now we can say this number with words. We have… two thousand, five hundred and eighty three. Remember to say the tens and ones together. Above, we have shown this value using dienes. Dienes help us see what the number means. 2 5 8 3
