Energy and matter in ecosystems
Objectives Identify the reasons for energy loss from one level to another in a food chain Define biomass and biomass pyramid
Who can remind me what do the arrows show in a food chain?
Energy pyramid Why do we show energy in a pyramid? 4⁰ CONSUMERS 3 CONSUMERS 2 CONSUMERS 1 CONSUMERS PRODUCERS
If we have 1000 ants feeding on 1 tree. We have much more ants. Does that mean we have more energy in the consumer level than the producer? That’s why we calculate the biomass
Biomass It is the dry mass of living things
Transfer of Energy When a lion eats a zebra, it does not get all of the energy from the zebra. Energy lost from chain “link” to “link” is significant! Where does that energy go? Think among your group for 1 minute and come up with as much answers as you can.
Energy is lost for 3 reasons Not all individuals in one level are eaten by the upper level (energy is lost to decomposers) Not all of what is eaten by the consumer is absorbed in the body (energy lost into waste) Not all of what is absorbed into the body of the consumer is converted to biomass (energy lost in respiration)
Worksheets Energy flow worksheet Energy transfer in biomes worksheet
Questions Why can’t we have more than 5 to 6 levels in a food chain? Why do we rarely see large carnivores?
