I woke up exhausted! I hardly slept because today my parents are trying to adopt a new little sister for our family. Today we find out if she’s allowed to live with us. At breakfast, we were all busy. I was revising for my driving theory test and Dad was doing his passport application. Mum was trying to get her head around some form for claiming PPI compensation from her bank. Dad gave me a lift, because he’s on annual leave today. On the way he gave me a lecture about why he wants me to stop buying beer for younger friends. He says teenagers were more responsible when he was growing up. I couldn’t imagine being part of an earlier generation. It seems crazy to me that when Dad was growing up, my gay friend Rudi wouldn’t be able to marry, and my uncle wouldn’t have had the right to paid parental leave. Crazy!

Why do laws change? Copy out into your book • Laws cover a vast range of activities e. g. adoption, terrorism or banking. • Laws can change to keep up to date with scientific and technological developments. E. g. Human Cloning Act which (which prevents a woman from reproducing with a genetically cloned embryo (scientific development) or the 1997 Harrassment Act was updated to include cyber bullying (technological development) • Laws also change because of changing values - e. g. we now have laws to prevent discrimination such as the Equality Act and to promote equality such as gay marriage.
