How we measure weather. . . Temperature- thermometer, Celsius (°C) Precipitation- rain gauge, millimetres (mm) Wind direction- windsock, N/S/E/W Wind speed- anemometer, Beaufort scale Cloud cover- oktas (out of 8) Visibility- transmissometer, metres (m) Air Pressure- barometer, millibars (mb) Humidity- hygrometer, percentage (%) Sunshine- average hours
A hygrometer is used to measure humidity. These are sometimes included on fancy clocks. Humidity is measured as a percentage. What are percentages always measured out of? Wind direction is reported by the direction it is blowing from, according to the compass. Wind blowing from the west is travelling eastwards so is called a westerly wind, not an easterly wind. A windsock or weather vane could be used. Wind speed can be measured using an anemometer. The strength of the wind is measured on the Beaufort scale (from 0 -12).
Air is light but because there is so much of it above us, it presses down on us. Air pressure is measured by a barometer. The units used are millibars (mb). The greater the reading, the higher the pressure. Precipitation is measured using a rain gauge. This is a funnel inside a graduated container. The depth of the rain in millimetres (mm) can be read from the side of the container.
An instrument called a transmissometer is used to measure visibility. It consists of a laser transmitter, and a receiver. They are separated by a certain distance (maybe 10 m). The transmitter sends a laser beam through open air toward the receiver. The instrument calculates how much of the laser beam got through. Visibility is measured in metres (m).
Cloud cover is measured in units called oktas. Each okta represents one eighth of the sky covered by cloud. How many oktas does this sky have? Look It’s like an array… Did You guess 3/8. If you did, well done! Sunshine is measured in number of hours. At the end of each month an average is worked out.
Make your own windsock! Roll a piece of paper longways to make a cylinder & glue/tape. Add strips of paper to the bottom. Glue on some string to the other end.
