Starter 2 – What affects populations? • What do you think might affect the size of a population? It could be any population of plants or animals? • You have 2 minutes to think about your ideas. Share your thoughts with the person next to you and be ready with your answers.

THREE Main Factors COMPETITION – Organisms compete for the same resources (within & between species). Plants – light, water & nutrients from soil. Animals – space (territory), food, water & mates. DISEASE – Infectious diseases can kill. Most fit and healthy stand best chance of survival. PREDATION – If an organism gets eaten then numbers decrease. Example – humans and cod!!

COMPETITION Competing for resources can have many effects: • Organisms will live where there

COMPETITION Competing for resources can have many effects: • Organisms will live where there are resources available for it to survive. • Competition means that a habitat will only support a certain number of organisms. If resources in an area decrease so will the population (move or die). • Also how a population spreads itself depends on available resources. If there isn’t many available then lots of space will be needed and if there is loads to go around then loads of organisms will live in a small space.

Work to do – Populations & Competition • Questions • Complete the competition worksheet and get it stuck into your exercise books. • Read pages 82 -85 of the Science Textbooks and answer summary questions in full sentences. • Extension: Does evolution always produce better organisms?

PLENARY 1. Name 3 factors which affect population size. 2. What do plants generally compete for? 3. What do animals generally compete for? 4. State two ways in which competition can affect a population. 5. Give an example of a population in the UK which competition has directly affected.
