AWAKENING • Renaissance began in Italy when there was an increased interest of the ancient Rome culture • Italy differed from the rest of Europe because it survived the Black Death • Trade flourished and manufacturing
LORENZO DE MEDICI • Lorenzo Medici was a well educated scholar • Came from a family organized a successful banking business and was one of the richest merchants in Europe
HUMANISM • The renaissance was a time period that combined historical ideas and themes with new ideas • Humanism was based on classical culture but more focused on worldly subjects rather than religious issues
RENAISSANCE ART • Many artists painted religious figures but there was a new style of painting of making it seem more realistic • Perspective painting • Rejected medieval art and architecture and embraced ancient Greek and Roman culture

NORTHERN RENAISSANCE
GERMANY • Albrecht Durer learned new Renaissance artistic techniques and applied them into his own paintings and engravings • Engravings use plates to make art • The first printing press was created by Johann Gutenberg which revolutionized books • Chinese and Koreans created something like this before
NETHERLANDS • Priest Erasmus used his knowledge of classical languages to translate the bible into vernacular • This directly changed the whole structure of the traditional Christian church • This led to the Martin Luther and the Reformation
ENGLAND • William Shakespeare was a poet and playwright • His love of words greatly increased the vocabulary of the English language • There was an increase of 1700 new words in his works
SPAIN • Miguel de Cervantes contributed to the Renaissance and his most famous work was Don Quixote • It’s a tale that makes fun of the medieval period
