Malawi’s ‘Beach’ § Similar size to Hungary or Austria with population of almost 14 million – ranked among the world’s most densely populated and least developed countries § Life expectancy is 40 years compared to over 80 years in the UK § 55% live below the poverty line and 85% live in the very poor rural areas in small villages of housing made of mud bricks § Literacy rate is only 63% compared to 99% in the UK (men 25% more than women) § 86 deaths to 1000 live births – very high figure due to only 56% having skilled care at the births § Almost 12% of the population are infected with HIV – resulting in many homes headed by children or the grandparents. § Over 1 million orphans – 1: 11 – over 50% due to HIV § THAT’S WHY!!
