Goals • To provide more efficient and cost-effective support of Win. NT workstations and servers for SLAC. • Deploy to select cooperating domains (BSD, SLAC) • Provide remote help desk services. 12/3/98

Goals II Use SMS to extend reach of support staff • 4 FTE central Server Side and SMS Support • 3 FTE central Client Side • 15 FTE Department Admins (9 hired by and directed by individual departments) • About a 100 -150 clients to 1 admin ratio 12/3/98

Goals III Manage rapid increase in number of systems • Accounts -from 100’s to 2050 • NT Workstations - 600 to 1200 (50% Dell 50% clones) • Servers - 8 to 22 (30 GB to 180 GB) • Macintoshes - around 800 to 700 Increases over 1 year (1997 -98) 12/3/98

Deployment Issues Heterogeneous Desktops and Management • Multi domain with distributed admin rights • Non standard desktop configurations • Variety of applications and plugs-ins not included in core desktop installation • Users not accepting SMS installations or leaving computers off during updates 12/3/98

Deployment Issues II Heterogeneous Desktops and Management • Primary Site Server must be a PDC or BDC • SMS works best when PSS is on same system also (SMS+BDC+SQL) • No ability to generate “On demand” queries of site data • Package deployment is subject to local security context. 12/3/98

Benefits • Lowering cost of ownership via reduced staff time supporting Windows desktops • Excellent tool for Help Desk and group administrators • Asset management via hardware and software inventory 12/3/98

Additional tools • Boot Floppy Project for new workstations/laptops • Custom install scripts (batch or Perl) for most public installation points • Seeding/retrofit of LAN with Wake. On. Lan compliant NIC’s • Addition of DMI v 2 agents to improve hardware inventory and management 12/3/98 • Compaq Insight Manager / SMS integration.

Status of Use @ SLAC • 50% coverage (600 out of 1200 NT WKS) • Routinely sending hot fixes for NT OS; IE 4. x and Netscape 4. x; Anti Virus updates • Deployed CAD Upgrades • Deployed NT 3. 51 to NT 4. 0 Upgrades • 100% non-compliance for hot fixes to non. SMS clients • Pending NT SP 4 and IE updates 12/3/98

Current SMS Projects • Low profile SMS clients • Migration PCM service and silent installs • Wider use of Windows Scripting host (Perl, Rexx) • Tuning stations with custom policy files • Net. View NT being tested to manage SMS alerts and SNMP/DMI traffic 12/3/98

Future - SMS 2. 0 • Testing Beta 2 • Non-intrusive setup and inventory in new pure 32 -bit clients • More Granular Security • Y 2 K compliance checker • Application version checking and control • Elevated context control for installations 12/3/98
