STANDARDS BASED GRADING THE FOUR CORNERS OF STANDARDS
STANDARDS BASED GRADING
THE FOUR CORNERS OF STANDARDS BASED GRADING v Grade is based on mastery of the Learning Target, which is based on National Standards. v No Zeros. Assign an incomplete (i) instead. v Homework is practice, therefore not graded. v No deductions for late work.
Standard: N-RN. 1 Explain how the definition of the meaning of rational exponents follows from extending the properties of integer exponents to those values. Learning Target: I can solve problems involving properties of exponents. How Do I Assess? _x_ Multiple Choice __Essay __ Oral __ Other __ Short Answer __ Matching __ Performance
ASSIGNING GRADES v 3 – Got It v 2 – Getting There v 1 – Getting Started It doesn’t matter how many points a learning target is worth as long as the points reflect how well the student has mastered the target.
GEOGRAPHY TEST SS 9 Grade by Learning Target Grids, latitude & Longitude Directions Time Zones Scale Contours Climate Graph Canada cities, prov, water. . ____ Total __/20 __/5 __/10 __/6 __/11 __/5 __/7 __/64 Myron Dueck
TO RE-TEST OR NOT TO RE-TEST It is never too late to learn!
RE-TESTING v The student decides whether to re-test or accept the original grade. v The student only has to re-test on the targets he/she did not master. v The student must have remediation before re-testing. • • A packet of additional work. Individual time with the teacher. Attend tutoring after school. Study Island v The re-test should have different types of questions than the original. v The teacher should decided how many times a student can re-test.

DOUBLE DIPPING v When giving quizzes during the unit, it is not necessary to give re-quizzes. v Design the quiz to match the corresponding section on the unit test. v The students’ score on the test also counts as the score for the re-quiz.
DOUBLE DIPPING Refer to the Geography Test Cover Sheet in the handout. Example: Johnny scores 4/10 on the Time Zones quiz. He spends extra time studying Time Zones in preparation for the unit test. He scores 9/10 on that section of the test. The teacher changes his quiz grade to 9/10.
STANDARDS BASED GRADING AND CLASS MANAGEMENT When a student asks to re-test, consider: v The students work ethic. v Attendance v Classroom Behavior Re-testing is a Privilege not a Right.
