Standardization of Watertight Hatches and Scuttles March 2021 1 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Agenda 1. Current Issues 2. Project Goals 3. Proposed Consolidation Efforts 4. Examples (30 x 30 hatch, 30 x 60 hatch, 21 inch scuttle, raised hatch hinge design) 5. Benefits of the Project 2 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Watertight Hatches and Scuttles: Current Issues - Multitude of drawings and options resulting in excessive variations in size, design, parts, and materials - Hatches with scuttles are designed to use 18” scuttles which are no longer preferred - There are no standard drawings associated with 30 x 30 Quick Acting (QA) hatches - There are no standard details for other commonly used options (i. e. , spring balance option for 30 x 30 hatch) - Lack of standard details require vendor designs to vary from vendor to vendor and nullify shock qualifications 3 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Project Goals: - Consolidate designs - Eliminate seldom used/unnecessary sizes - Select single pressure for each size - Consolidate parts - Standardize design of each size (to greatest extent possible) - Standardize materials - Standardize panel thickness - Standard hinge for use with or without spring balance - Standard stiffener size rather than having multiple stiffener options - Consolidate drawings similar to NAVSEA standard door drawings 4 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Project Goals (cont. ): - Limitations - Opportunities to standardize design of hatches and scuttles exist but opportunities to reduce the total number of variations are limited due to the nature of how hatches and scuttles operate - e. g. Dogging mechanisms are completely different between quick acting and individually dogged variants - This in turn necessitates different panel designs and thus the continued existence of multiple variations 5 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Proposed Consolidation: - Reduce number of available sizes - Eliminate seldom used sizes - Eliminate sizes that can be replaced by other sizes (i. e. all 42 x 48 could be replaced by 48 x 48) - Limit available pressure options to one higher pressure design - All hatches and scuttles requiring lesser pressure to use the higher rated standard closure 6 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Examples: 3 closures were chosen as examples for this project: -30 x 30 Hatch -30 x 60 Hatch -21” Diameter scuttle The raised hatch hinge design was also reviewed 7 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
30 x 30 Hatch Standardization - Add standard design for QA hatch - Add standard detail for spring balance - Standardize pressure rating - Standardize to 8 dogs for Individually Dogged (ID) hatches and 4 dogs for QA hatches - Standardize thickness of panel - Standardize stiffener sizes - Add a scuttle option of 21” 8 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
Current 30 X 30 Hatch Design Proposed 30 X 30 Hatch Design - 2 Profiles - Flush - Raised - Individually dogged and Quick Acting - Multiple psi options - One standard psi option - 6, 8, and 10 dog options - - Various panel thicknesses and stiffener sizes 8 dogs for Individually dogged and 4 dogs for QA - Standard panel thickness and single stiffener size - Spring balanced option - Add a scuttle option of 21” - No detail for spring balanced option - No detail for 21” scuttle option 9 HARD STUFF DONE RIGHT A DIVISION OF HUNTINGTON INGALLS INDUSTRIES
