End to End Buried Splice Step Instructions 1. Gather the tools needed. This includes a knife, scissors, a black marker, a metal fid, electrical tape, a needle, and a ruler. 2. Standard Work Instruction Visuals A fid length is determined by multiplying the circumference of the rope to be spliced by 7. On page two of this document is a rigging reference sheet that already has the single fid length calculated. ***Note: When splicing spectra, plasma, and vectran products three times the fid length should be used. When splicing polyester and nylon products two times the fid is required. Example: ½” diameter rope has a fid of 10 -1/2”. For a plasma rope the fid length to be used is 3 x 10 -1/2” = 31 -1/2” fid. 3. Orient the ends so that they over lap by the required fid length determined in step two. End to End Buried Splice Step Instructions Visuals 4. Mark a black line on each of the ends at the fid length determined in step two. 5. Move the two ropes so the line are across from each other. Owner: Standard Work Instruction Document #: Revision: Effective Date: Page 4/14
Buried Grommet Splice Step Instructions 6. Tape the metal fid to one end of the rope. To do this butt the two ends and tape them together. Do not overlap the two as this will make it to thick for future steps Standard Work Instruction Visuals 6 7 7. Insert the fid through the middle of the rope at the black line on the opposite end of the rope ensuring there are six strands on either side of the fid. There should be three strands going in each direction. Note: Ensure the fid does not snag or spear any strands in this process. 7 Owner: P Document #: Revision: Effective Date: Page 5/14
Buried Grommet Splice Step Instructions 8. Pull the rope through until the two black marks are even with each other. This completes this half of the crossover and completes the first lock stitch. 9. Count down two picks (9 a) and push the metal fid through the rope again (9 b). Ensure there are six strands on either side of the fid. There should be three going in each direction. Standard Work Instruction Visuals 8 9 b 9 a Note: Ensure the fid does not snag or spear any strands in this process 10. Pull tight. This completes the second lock stitch. 10 Owner: P Document #: Revision: Effective Date: Page 6/14
Buried Grommet Splice Step Instructions 11. Count down two more picks and insert the metal fid into the rope only this time angle it so that the metal fid will pass down the center of the rope. Ensure the fid does not spear or snag any strands in this process. 12. Continue to push the metal fid down the center of the rope until it passed though three times the length of the fid. Once it has passed this point push the fid out of the rope and pull tight. Standard Work Instruction Visuals 11 Note: There should be about a fid of rope exposed past the exit point noted by the arrow in photo 12. 12 13. Untape and remove the fid from the end of the rope. Owner: P Document #: Revision: Effective Date: 12 Page 7/14
Buried Grommet Splice Step Instructions 14. Taper the end that the fid was just removed from by marking a set of picks closest to the end of the rope. Once marked move up the rope skipping one set of picks and marking the next. Continue to move up the rope this time skipping two sets of pick and mark the next. Continue to alternate skipping one set then two until there are five sets of marks on the rope. 15. Pull the marked strands out of the braid. Using a sharp knife or scissors cut the pulled strands at the marks. Owner: P Standard Work Instruction Visuals Document #: 14 15 15 Revision: Effective Date: Page 8/14
Buried Grommet Splice Step 16. Standard Work Instructions Visuals With one hand hold the rope at the original insertion point, this hand should not move. Place the other hand directly down the splice and begin to pull towards the tapered end. The tapered end should get sucked inside the rope. 16 16 16 17 17. Repeat steps 6 through 16 going in the opposite direction. The final product should look like photo 17. Owner: P Document #: Revision: Effective Date: Page 9/14
End to End Buried Splice Step Instructions 18. Once both ends of the splice are complete, they must be stitched. Gather a needle and a twine roughly the size of one of the strands in the rope. It is ok if it is slightly smaller. 19. Locate the lockstitch on the rope that is furthest from the crossover point. This will be the starting point for the stitching. Standard Work Instruction Visuals 18 19 Note: The crossover is designated by the yellow X. The red arrows point to the first lockstitch and the yellow arrows point to the second lock stitch. The second is the furthest one from the cross over. 20. Count down three picks and inset the needle between the strands. Push the needle straight through the rope ensuring that there are 6 strands on either side of the needle. The six strands should consist of three in each direction. 20 Note: Be careful not to snag or spear any of the outer strands in this process. Owner: Document #: Revision: Effective Date: Page 10/14
End to End Buried Splice Step Instructions 21. Count down three picks and push the needle back through the rope. Ensure that there are 6 strands on either side of the needle. The six strands should consist of three in each direction. Standard Work Instruction Visuals 21 Note: Be careful not to snag or spear any of the outer strands in this process. It is ok to spear the inner strands. 22. Repeat step 21 until the needle has passed through the rope a total of five times. This can also be counted by the four loops in the strands. 22 2 4 1 23. Moving in the reverse direction, count back up three picks and push the needle back though the middle of the rope. Be cautious not to push the needle through the stitching from the previous stitches. 3 23 23 Note: Be careful not to snag or spear any of the outer strands in this process. Owner: Document #: Revision: Effective Date: Page 11/14
End to End Buried Splice Step Instructions 24. Repeat the process of stitching back up the previous stitches ensuring to pass back through the same holes until there a total of seven loops. Standard Work Instruction Visuals 24 2 1 25. Tighten all of the loops but the most recent (loop 7 in photo 24). This can be done by pulling on the loose ends. 26. Tie a square knot with the two loose ends. Try to keep the knot as close as possible to the first insertion point of the stitching. End to End Buried Splice Step 27. Standard Work Instructions Visuals 27 Thread both loose end into the needle and insert the needle at a 45° angle back into the first hole. Note: The needle should be angled towards the crossover point of the splice. 28. Pull the needle until both of the ends are through the rope. Unthread the needle and pull on both ends until the knot is buried inside the rope. 29. Cut the tails flush with the rope. If they do not disappear back into the rope push them back into the rope with the back of the needle. Owner: Document #: 28 29 Revision: Effective Date: Page 13/14
End to End Buried Splice Step 30. Standard Work Instructions Visuals Once complete you should have what appears to be four circular stitches in the rope. 30 1 31. Owner: 2 3 4 Repeat steps 18 – 30 on the opposite side of the splice. Document #: Revision: Effective Date: Page 14/14
