STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER THE EFFECTS OF THE WEATHER This last section of the weather topic is about how weather affects us in our daily lives. In some cases it helps us and in others it hinders us. BENEFITS OF THE WEATHER On the next slide are seven weather categories. There also ten results statements. Write after each category at least one statement that fits best – you can use each statement twice if you need to. You may like to work with your neighbours on this.

Prolongued rain Long hours of sunshine Lots of cloud at night/ in winter Hot in summer Freezing in winter Good visibility WEATHER Prevents transport accidents Generates power on high hillsides Keeps the surface warmer- no frost overnight Delivers food to plant roots Allows activities to go ahead Fills rivers and reservoirs Dries a washing Ripens crops, especially fruit Kills off germs and some diseases
STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY PROBLEMS WITH THE WEATHER The weather is more often associated with bad effects! It can affect people at work, where time/money can be lost in delays. It can affect people at leisure where weather can spoil plans for enjoyment. With both these categories, sometimes weather can be life-threatening!! WEATHER
STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Read sections 5 A and B on page 37. You will need to be able to write answers like the ones on this page for the exam. Notice that there always reasons for the statements about who are affected by what about the weather, and often you are asked to suggest solutions to solve or reduce the problem. Note that most solutions involve spending more money!
STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Complete the tables by copying the missing sections from the textbook, pages 37/8, sections 5 B, C, D and E 13 You have now only the assessment questions to tackle for this section of the weather unit and then you have finished! WELL DONE!
STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY QUICK TEST TIME! WEATHER YOU MAY BE GIVEN SOME OR ALL TO DO AS HOMEWORK! If so, do it on paper, not in your jotters. 1. Everyone should do the CORE ( blue) questions on page 38 of the textbook. 2. Then you can choose to do any mixture of FOUNDATION, GENERAL CREDIT or EXTENSION questions. Do a total of six questions.
