Stalin Takes Power • When Lenin died in 1924, Joseph Stalin took power. He led the USSR through World War II and died in 1953. • By 1928, established himself as absolute dictator.

Totalitarian State • Stalin turned the Soviet Union into a totalitarian state. • Totalitarian state- a government that strictly controls all aspects of life by force. – The party used propaganda. – The Communists replaced religion with their own ideology.

Stalin’s Totalitarian Elements • Cult of the leader: the all-knowing and all-seeing Father of the People.
