Deponent Verbs VERBS • We have learned that most verbs have two voices, active and passive. • Active-the subject does the action of the verb – Grumio cooks the peacock. – Grumiō pavōnem coquit. • Passive-the action of the verb is done to the subject. • Grumio is cooked by the peacock. • Grumiō ā pavōne coquitur.
Deponent Verbs • There is a special group of Latin verbs that are called deponent verbs. • They are always passive in form, but they are active in meaning. • When you look them up, they look like this: – Cōnor, cōnārī, cōnātus sum I try to try I tried/have tried. All the forms are passive. But the meaning is active!
Deponent Verbs • • • So, they look passive They are active in meaning! They will never have ō, s, t, mus, tis, nt They will always have r, ris, tur, mini, ntur.
Deponent Verbs • There aren’t that many deponent verbs, but the ones we have are very common. – cōnor, cōnārī, conātus sum
Infinitives • cōnārī = to try • conātus esse=to have tried • resent
Perfect Participle • Conātus=having tried
Present • Cōnor I try • Cōnāris you try • Cōnātur he tries cōnāmur we try cōnāminī y’all try cōnantur they try
Imperfect • Cōnābar • Cōnābāris I was trying you were trying • Cōnābātur he was trying cōnābāmur you were trying cōnābāminī y’all were tryng cōnābantur they were trying
FUTURE • Cōnābor I will try cōnābimur we will try • Cōnāberis you will try cōnābiminī y’all will try • Cōnābitur he will try cōnābuntur they will try
Perfect • Cōnātus sum I tried/have tried cōnātī sumus we tried • Cōnātus es you tried cōnātī estis y’all tried • Cōnātus est he tried cōnātī sunt they tried
Pluperfectt • Cōnātus eram I had tried Cōnātī erāmus we had tried • • Cōnātus erās you had tried Cōnātī erātis y’all had tried • Cōnātus erat he had tried Cōnātī erant they had tried
Future Perfect • • • Cōnātus erō I will have tried Cōnātus eris you will have tried Cōnātus erit he will have tried Cōnātī erimus we will have tried Cōnātī eritis y’all will have tried Cōnātī erunt they will have tried
• You need to distinguish between “real passive” verbs and deponent verbs, that only look passive. • You do this by knowing which verbs are deponent.
