ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Why are we changing our assessment? Government believed the system was over complicated and difficult for parents to understand. It encouraged teachers to focus on a pupil’s current level, rather than consider more broadly what a pupil can actually do.

In May 2014 it won the DFE’s ‘Assessment Innovation’ award. They judged it as, “Clear, engaging and accessible for both children and parents”.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL What are Learning Ladders? A paper and computer based system to track pupil progress. A Learning Ladder for Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Each rung on a ladder relates to a key learning objective that in turn relates to age appropriate expectations.

The rungs are colour co-ordinated according to the year group to which they belong (Year group numbers are not displayed in pupil booklets). There are not rungs for every year group. For example no rungs for times tables exist for Year 6 as the expectation is that pupils will master these before they leave Year 5.

These are: Working towards age related expectations (Emerging) Achieved age related expectations (Secure) Exceeding age related expectations (Advanced) It is these gradings that we will formally report to parents.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Learning Ladders Scorecard Having monitored the progress of the pupil on the paper based system this is then added to the Learning Ladders tracking system. Using a computer algorithm each year group’s objectives are calculated to total 100 points. If a child ‘Masters’ each rung on their year group’s ladder they will achieve a score of 100.
