ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Why are we changing our assessment? Part of the government reforms to the National Curriculum, the system of ‘levels’ used to report children’s attainment and progress have been removed.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Why are we changing our assessment? Government believed the system was over complicated and difficult for parents to understand. It encouraged teachers to focus on a pupil’s current level, rather than consider more broadly what a pupil can actually do.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Why Learning Ladders? Learning without limits – Deep learners. Personalises learning. Allows pupils to take ownership of their learning. Pupils know their next steps in learning. Pupils can articulate their targets.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Why Learning Ladders? Learning Ladders was the only system we found that met all of the requirements we had. Researched several systems. In May 2014 it won the DFE’s ‘Assessment Innovation’ award. They judged it as, “Clear, engaging and accessible for both children and parents”.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Why Learning Ladders? We believe it has the potential to impact significantly on the attainment and progress of our pupils. Pupils take pride and have ownership of their learning.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL What are Learning Ladders? A paper and computer based system to track pupil progress. A Learning Ladder for Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Each rung on a ladder relates to a key learning objective that in turn relates to age appropriate expectations.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL How Learning Ladders work? Each booklet is split into sections based upon key areas of learning taken from the National Curriculum. Consists of rungs with key objectives from the new National Curriculum.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL How Learning Ladders work? The rungs are colour co-ordinated according to the year group to which they belong (Year group numbers are not displayed in pupil booklets). There are not rungs for every year group. For example no rungs for times tables exist for Year 6 as the expectation is that pupils will master these before they leave Year 5.

Pupil’s Learning Ladder Teacher’s Learning Ladder 1) Colour copy. 2) No year groups shown. 3) Need to be available for each lesson. 1) Colour copy. 2) Year groups shown. 3) Used to keep a record of coverage and support planning.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL How do the Ladders work? Each rung needs to be assessed on three separate occasions before we can be sure it has been mastered. Pupil/Teacher Self Assessment. Apply. Understanding.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL End of year expectations We will be using three categories with which to assess against age related expectations. These are: Working towards age related expectations (Emerging) Achieved age related expectations (Secure) Exceeding age related expectations (Advanced) It is these gradings that we will formally report to parents.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Learning Ladders Scorecard Having monitored the progress of the pupil on the paper based system this is then added to the Learning Ladders tracking system. Using a computer algorithm each year group’s objectives are calculated to total 100 points. If a child ‘Masters’ each rung on their year group’s ladder they will achieve a score of 100.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Learning Ladders Scorecard Shows progression throughout the year. Shows every little step of progress made by each pupil. Not every child will make 100 points.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Reporting Parents will receive a scorecard report three times a year (end of each term). Parents informed during consultations. Parents can access them anytime.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL What can you do at home? Learning Ladders go home once every half term. Update on what your child has achieved. You can support your child with any identified gaps. Parent portal. Learning Ladders must be sent back into school!

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL How do Learning Ladders help parents? Provide a much more detailed and up to date assessment of your child. Provide parents with information on what your child is learning in each year group. Provide regular updates on your child’s progress.
