Reopening Plan for SBCA • It is the goal of St. Bartholomew Catholic Academy to provide quality education to our students. We look forward to continuing that education in person for the 2020 -2021 school year. • With the opening of our academy, we will focus on the following principles to guide our decisions.
Reopening Plan for SBCA • 1. The safety and well being of our students, faculty, and staff will be our main concern and priority. • 2. That everything possible is done to open our building in a safe and timely manner. • 3. The continued monitoring of COVID-19, and the preparedness in the event of the academy closing. • 4. The transparency and honesty of our families to be responsible for the well being of not only their children, but the entire St. Bartholomew community. • 5. Ensuring that all CDC and DOH protocols and guidelines are followed in the school.
Reopening Plan for SBCA • The SBCA COVID-19 task force will be headed by the administrator (Mrs. Gonzalez), members will include: • The two office staff (Ms. Wendy and Mr. Ramales) • The school Nurse (Ms. Camile) • School Aide (Ms. Connie) • Board Chair (Ms. Munoz) • Pastor (Father Rick)
Entrance Protocols for: Students • Signage for social distancing, mask requirement, and temperature checks will be placed in all three school entrances • 43 rd St. (red doors, 4415 Judge St. (main doors) , and Whitney side entrance (blue doors) • These signs will also be placed in the first floor entrance of the 43 rd St. doors and in front of the main office on the ground level of the school. • Entrance protocols for students: • Students waiting outside to enter the building, will line up on Judge St. facing the academy, leaving 6 feet distance between each other. • Students will wear their mask while on line and entering the building.

Entrance Protocols for: Teachers: • Teachers will have their own entrance doors entering from the small school yard on 43 rd Street by the back parking lot. • There will be a sanitizing station at the entrance of parking lot door for teachers to sanitize their hands. • Teachers must wear mask at all times. • Teachers will receive through Option. C, a wellness survey they must complete daily before coming to work.
Entrance Protocols for: Visitors: • Parents will not be allowed in the building during arrival/dismissal. • Visitors will have their own entrance/exit (43 rd Street) • Appointments will be strongly recommended. • A COVID task member will take the visitors’ temperature at arrival. • All visitors must be wearing a mask at arrival and at all times during the visit. • Visitors must wash/sanitize their hands at arrival (sanitizing stations will be set up at the 43 rd Street door and in front of the office on the ground level)
Face Coverings Protocol • Students are required to wear face coverings when in the school building and maintain appropriate social/physical distancing (mask must be plain and free of any objectionable statements or support of any specific group, product, or political view) Students will be provided with a mask with the school logo. • Students may wear a disposable mask or a reusable mask from home (reusable masks must be taken home daily and washed). • The school will have masks for those students who forget their mask at home or for emergencies. • Faculty and Staff are required to wear masks. Masks will be provided to all staff members by the academy.
Face Coverings Protocol (cont’d) • Face shields will be provided for the lower school teachers, for use during reading instruction, but will not be used to replace a mask. • All visitors to the school will be required to wear a mask at all times during the visit. • Students will remove their mask to eat lunch, while outside if they go out for recess, and during their short mask breaks while they are maintaining 6 feet social distance. • All masks must be clearly labeled with the student’s name, students must place their mask in a ziplock bag during lunch time or during their mask break time.
Developing Routines for Daily Health Checks • The COVID response team will respond to all COVID-19 concerns. All school staff and families will know who this person is and how to contact them. • Nurse will train staff and students on how to wear masks. • Nurse will train staff on taking temperatures upon entry. • There will be a task members at every entrance taking the students temperature at arrival • Parental will sign an agreement that masks are to be worn while inside the building (Parents will supply their child with a mask, the school will have extra masks for emergencies or the event that a child forgets theirs at home)
Developing Routines for Daily Health Checks (cont’d) • Parents sign an agreement if child is sniffling, fever or any feeling of sickness, child must stay home and work remotely. • Parents will also be responsible for completing a wellness survey daily, which they will receive through our parent portal Option. C before the students come to school. • Teachers will also complete a wellness survey before coming to work daily. • In following DOH guideline, to maintain healthy air quality and ventilation, upon arrival, the custodian will open all windows, classrooms doors, hallway doors and windows in the staircase to maintain proper ventilation in the school.
Social Distancing in the Classroom • Space seating / desks will be 6 feet apart. All bookcases and extra furniture removed to maximize space. • 18 desk max per room, 24 -25 max in the afterschool and art room, which have more square footage. • Students will stay in the same class throughout the day • Upper school teachers will rotate • Student desks will face in the same direction. • Students will follow the 6 feet distancing markers on the floor located around the school.
Social Distancing in the Classroom (cont’d) • Hallways will be clearly labeled with direction markers ( 43 rd Street staircase will be for going up and the Whitney Street staircase will be for coming down. ) • On the third floor, 6 feet markers will be on the floor, coming from 43 rd Street staircase, students will stay on the right side of the hallway following the arrows to move forward, the left side of the hallway will have 6 feet markers and arrows to direct the students to walk in the opposite direction. • Teachers and students will wear a mask in class, having mask breaks in between, the teacher will allow for a 10 minute mask break by rows every 2 hrs. • School will provide mask for teachers and PPE shields for teachers during reading instruction this will be for classes in: (Kindergarten, 1 st, 2 nd, & 3 rd grade)
Social Distancing Outside the Classroom Hallways • Hallways will be clearly labeled with one-way direction markers ( 43 rd Street staircase will be for going up and the Whitney Street staircase will be for coming down. ) • On the third floor, 6 feet markers will be on the floor, coming from 43 rd Street staircase. • Students will stay on the right side of the hallway following the arrows to move forward, the left side of the hallway will have 6 feet markers and arrows to direct the students to walk in the opposite direction.
Social Distancing Outside the Classroom Hallways/Bathroom ● Staggered use of bathroom (scheduled bathroom breaks) ● Clean and disinfect between each use. (the custodian will wipe down all bathroom and spray disinfectant after each class) ● Common areas; staggered use, clean & disinfect between use. (the custodian will wipe down all railings after each class enters) ● Limit students in bathroom area since they cannot be at least 6 feet apart. (clear divider will be placed to separate students at the sink) ● Large gathering spaces; staggered use, adhere social distancing mandates, place markings on the floor in the gym, clean & disinfect between use.
Tentative Bathroom Schedule • Kindergarten 9: 30 (gym bathrooms) • 1 st grade 9: 00 (third floor, two students at a time for boys, 3 students at a time for girls) • 2 nd grade 9: 30 • 3 rd grade 10: 00 • 4 th grade 10: 30 • 5 th grade 10: 45 • 6 th grade 11: 00 • 7 th grade 11: 15 • 8 th grade 11: 30 • Each bathroom will be wiped down and sprayed by the custodian after each use.
Extra Curricular Activities • Selected extracurricular programs and activities will be allowed, considering social distancing guidelines. • Assemblies and other gatherings will be limited to virtual gatherings and meetings. • Follow the “Interim Guidance for Sports and Recreation during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency” in the development of these policies. • Interscholastic sports will not permitted until further notice.
Food Services • Breakfast / lunch will be brought to classrooms by the same two people for students to eat. • Staggered schedule will be provided for supervision purposes. • Staff member will wash hands thoroughly before packing lunches. • Designated staff member to count lunches for each class to be distributed by designated office staff/ designated aide. • Staff members will use gloves while handling, packing, and distributing of lunch. • Face coverings will be used by staff members. • All garbage will be collected by designated aide/volunteer and retrieved by custodial staff. • (masks will be removed by students and placed in their individual ziplock bag until after lunch)
Tentative Lunch Schedule • 11: 00 - 11: 30 - Kindergarten, 1 st grade, 2 nd grade • 11: 30 - 12: 00 - 3 rd grade, 4 th grade, 5 th grade • 12: 00 - 12: 30 - 6 th grade, 7 th grade, 8 th grade
Before and Aftercare • • There will be no before care program. Policies regarding aftercare programs will follow social distancing guidelines. After-school students will be divided into cohorts and placed in designated classes. Scheduled cleaning and disinfection will take place before and after the program.
Scheduling Options to Facilitate Reduced Capacity at School Survey parents on the following options: • Option 1 - Parent chooses full distance/virtual learning • Option 2 - Full in-school following 6 foot CDC guidelines • (We can currently house grades K-3 & 5 th grade in school all day, every day) • (Grades 4, 6, 7, 8 will be moved into bigger classroom or divided into cohorts) • Parent who choose full virtual learning , students will follow the school day schedule and have access to the lesson live from home using a virtual platform like zoom or google meets.
Scheduling Options to Facilitate Reduced Capacity at School (cont’d) • This option will be by trimester and will be visited before the start of the next marking period. Parents will have an opportunity to switch from virtual to in person or from in person to virtual. • Parents can switch from in person to virtual at any time, but a switch from virtual to in person must be done at the end of the trimester. • Students who get sick during in person instruction, must stay home and access the learning from home. • Parents will need to sign a contract choosing which option they have chosen for their child.
Plan to Handle Confidentiality Issues 1. The academy will follow and comply with all HIPPA laws, all parent and student information and confidentiality issues will be handled by the school administrator, office staff, and nurse. They will then electronically transfer information to those concerned. 2. Hold meetings with office personnel, nurse, staff to ensure safety, medical privacy rights. 3. Revisit plan weekly to monitor and evaluate programming and make adjustments.
Procuring Necessary Supplies for Hygiene like Hand Sanitizer, Wipes with Bleach, etc. • Purchase bulk materials approved by the CDC and DOH which are listed; • Supplies: soap, hand sanitizer dispensers, paper towels, tissues, disinfectant wipes & thermometers, fogger machine • Procuring the necessary supplies for hygiene like hand sanitizer stations for each class, front door on 43 rd St. and front of the office, sanitizer, wipes with bleach, etc. • We will designate one person to oversee supplies (Mr. Ramales) • Every desk will have a box of disinfectant wipes • Each child to have personal hand sanitizer (this will be added to their supply list, the school will have sanitizer in each classroom.
Deep-Cleaning of Facilities and High Touch Areas • A cleaning company has been hired to maintain the cleanliness and healthy conditions of the academy. • The building will be cleaned and disinfect frequently, touched surfaces such as door handles, sink handles, drinking fountains, and handrails will be cleaned and disinfected every two hours. • Specific scheduled deep cleaning of classrooms will be done on a daily basis. • In the event of a positive case or an emergency, distance / virtual learning will take place for all students. Notifications would be sent to parents and stakeholders.
Deep-Cleaning of Facilities and High Touch Areas (cont’d) • The isolation room will be on the third floor (counselor’s room 305), a student who demonstrates symptoms will be placed there with the COVID coordinator (Ms. Wendy, she will dressed in PPE equipment, until the student is picked up, the room will be sprayed and closed for 24 hours before completely disinfected. A letter will be sent home to the students in the class and the class will be closed for 14 days. • As we prepare for the opening, we will also prepare our students for this new and different environment, we will have zoom meetings with parents, show the students the equipment that will be used (have someone dressed in a full PPE suit, so in the event they have to sit in this room, they are not frightened by the equipment, show them the PPE shields the teachers will be using).
Protocols for Wearing Face Masks • Mandatory Cloth Face Covering for all; faculty, students and visitors. • Provide workshops on how to teach all students, especially younger students to wear allday settings such as school. • Students will be allowed to remove their face coverings for lunch and short breaks during instructional time, provided that appropriate social distancing is being observed. • Students who cannot tolerate wearing the face mask for medical/sensory reasons maybe exempt from the requirement but the student’s physician will need to propose an alternate covering and the social distancing requirement must be observed at all times. If an acceptable alternative cannot be arranged, the student will participate in the instructional program through remote learning. • Training for faculty for student emergencies.
Reviewing and Updating Emergency Contact • Containment Plan includes protocols and procedures for how to respond to positive or presumed-positive cases, as well as preventative practices. • Plan: protocols for safely caring for a student, faculty, or staff member if they develop symptoms of COVID-19 during the school day; • In the event that a student or teacher demonstrates symptoms during instruction, there will be an isolation room will be on the third floor (counselor’s room 305), a student who demonstrates symptoms will be placed their with the COVID coordinator (Ms. Wendy, she will dressed in PPE equipment, until the student is picked up, the room will be sprayed and closed for 24 hours before completely disinfected. A letter will be sent home to the students in the class and the class will be closed for 14 days. The student must visit his/her doctor, get tested and have proof of negative test results before returning to instruction.
Reviewing and Updating Emergency Contact • A teacher who demonstrates symptoms will be removed from the class, a substitute will cover the class and the teacher will be sent home, the teacher must go to the doctor, get tested and show negative results before returning to school. • As we prepare for the opening, we will also prepare our students for this new and different environment, we will have zoom meetings with parents, show the students the equipment that will be used ( have someone dressed in a full PPE suit, so in the event they have to sit in this room, they are not frightened by the equipment, show them the PPE shields the teachers will be using) • Isolation Procedures isolate individuals who screen positive symptoms (fever) upon arrival, or symptomatic individuals should they become symptomatic while at school.
Reviewing and Updating Emergency Contact • Procedures for pick-up arrangements, for symptomatic students, faculty, and staff. In order to return, a doctor’s note is needed. • Infected Individuals • communicate requirements that persons who have tested positive complete isolation, a doctor’s note to return stating they will not transmit COVID-19 when returning to in-person learning. (students can still access the learning from home) • Exposed Individuals: Requirements to inform families that student was exposed to the COVID-19 virus • Parents will be asked to provide emergency contact information for a minimum of 4 adults which can be called in case of an emergency
Health and Safety Measures: • Parents will keep their child home if they have any of the following symptoms: fever, cough, stuffy nose, chills, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, congestion, or runny nose. • Parents and faculty will complete a wellness survey daily using google forms and Option. C our communication platform, any student that exhibits any symptoms will stay home and access the learning remotely. • Any teacher who exhibits any symptoms will contact administration immediately and a substitute will cover the class for the day. • The COVID – 19 task force will monitor staff and students throughout the day for signs of illness.
Emotional and Social Well Being: • It is important to show students that although they are coming back to school, things are going to look very different. • Once the teachers have decorated their rooms, pictures will be posted and shared with families and students to show the social distancing. • Virtual videos of the spacing and signage around the building identifying social distancing and where students can stand. • We will have the teachers zoom with their potential classes and show them what they would look like using the mask and the PPE shields, so they don’t feel frightened. • Students will be able to see what a person would look like in the whole PPE gear, have them become familiar with the equipment. • The counselor will conduct check in with the classes and students.
Surveying Stakeholders to Evaluate Programming and Make Adjustments • Review our screening; temperature checks • Survey parents and faculty to ensure we are following protocols. • Survey parents who may have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus. • Continue to monitor and follow all CDC and DOH guidelines.
