Overall Project Objectives �You will develop your marking out skills. �You will develop your ability to read and follow working drawings �Master the use of practical hand tool �Develop your exposure to power tools and machines. �Understand how woodwork joints can be used in different ways.
What does the digger project include? �The digger project in cooperates a number of woodworking joints: � Mortise & Tenon � Bridle Joint � Housing Joint � Screwed Joint �It also entails shaping of the body which will include processes such as, sawing, drilling, sanding, chiselling and band sawing. �Accuracy and patience is very important for the completion of this project.
What materials are we using? �The materials we are using to make this project is called red deal, its is a soft wood and falls under the pine wood classification. �It is called red deal as its grain has a reddish colour through it. �The wood is quarter sawing for maximum strength. �Red deal comes from the scots pine tree

The different parts of the digger

Step one: The Body The 4 pieces for the body and the piece for the bucket will be market out and cut from the 44 x 44 piece
The cab and arm block � The cab is 80 x 44. The slope needs to be cut on the bandsaw and smoothened down using the Belt sander �Arm Block 22 mm 6 mm 22 mm 25 mm 40 mm 50 mm Diameter 6. 5 mm
Glue the Body
Step 2: Marking out the arms 2 of these arms are needed 25 mm � Mark out angles to allow the arms close. Measure down 15 mm either side.
Step 3: Tracks � Mark out the trench and curve of the tracks, the trench is 10 mm deep 40 mm 70 mm 25 mm
Step 4: Spacer between the body and tracks �A round spacer is needed between the body and tracks to allow it spin. Screw is used to fasten the body to the tracks
Step 5: Mark out the Bucket � Once the tenon is marked out you must free hand sketch on the shape of the bucket 6 mm 25 mm m 19 m
Preparation for finish �Using the belt sander and sand paper and the sanding block, sand the whole digger down using the different grits of paper. Make sure all pencil marks are removed
Assembly
Choose from which finish you prefer. �Varnish �Danish Oil It would be better to disassemble the project, apply the finish and re assemble.
