The Progressive Era • A time of social, political and economic change in America. • Because of the poor economic condition of most Americans, people began demanding reform. • Progressives – people who supported reform. – They thought things could be improved through government regulation.
Muckraker • Writers/journalists during the Progressive Era that dug up and reported the “muck” in American society.

Upton Sinclair • Muckraker • Wrote: The Jungle – Book that discussed the poor living and working conditions in the cities. – It also explains the horrors of the meatpacking industry. As a result, the government created a federal meat inspection program.
Ida Tarbell • Muckraker • Revealed the corrupt business practices of the Standard Oil Company. • Helped encouraged reforms in the business community to dissolve monopolies.
Jane Addams • “Mother of Social Work” • Created the Hull House • Hull House – housed social activists who provided help, education and other assistance to the poor, underprivileged, and immigrant workers.
Theodore Roosevelt • Organized the Rough Riders during the Spanish. American War. • 26 th President of the US • A conservationist • Further developed the National Park System. – • Created five new parks Pushed through Progressive reforms
The Progressive Movement and Race • Jim Crow Laws – Laws that established segregation – Progressive reformers challenged segregation in the court system. • Plessy vs. Ferguson – The Supreme Court upheld segregation – “Separate but equal” • NAACP – National Association of the Advancement of Colored People. – Pushed for the progress of African Americans – W. E. B. Du. Bois founded the NAACP.

Significant Reforms • Labor Laws – States passed minimum wages – Age limits on how younger workers can be (12 -16 years old). – Laws passed that limited working hours – Laws passed to make the work environment safer.

The 18 th Amendment (1919) – Prohibited the sell, consumption, and distribution of alcohol. 3. The 19 th Amendment (1920) – Gave women the right to vote

The people can remove corrupt officials from office through special elections. Referendum – Public officials allow the public to vote on legislation.
