Why become a squire? Normally the main reason for becoming a squire was to earn knighthood. A squire had to earn knighthood and his means of doing that would be by amassing skill with a sword and performing the duties he was assigned. A knight typically took his squire into battle with him and gave him a chance to prove himself. If he proved his loyalty and skill in battle, he would have a “Dubbing”, an official ceremony that made him a knight.

How did Chaucer satirize the Squire Chaucer describes the squire as having average height, great strength, and being of twenty years of age. He also describes his youth as fresh as the month of may. Chaucer also says he is very talented and is skilled in almost every field. The physical illustration of Squire is carefully surrounded by sexual references and the object of his chivalry is his lady. Although unlike other characters the squire is portrayed in a neutral manner and left it up to the reader to decide his moral standing. Chaucer’s squire is a wonderful example of what a squire is supposed to be in pursuing knighthood, but he also seems to be interested more in things like song writing and sexuality that don't belong in the battle field.
