Intro to Squids • Invertebrate = no backbone • Belongs to the class Cephalopoda – Head-footed – Brain is right above the tentacles with the heart and digestive system at the top – Includes cuttlefish and octopus • Carnivores • Ranges from size of thumb nail to 20 meters long • Squid Video

Squid External Structure • Beak = ripping apart meat • Tentacles • Mantle =

Squid External Structure • Beak = ripping apart meat • Tentacles • Mantle = takes in and ejects water from a siphon to help the squid move • Chromatophores = cells with pigment for color change • Color change cuttlefish video

External Structures • You will work with your lab partner to identify the external

External Structures • You will work with your lab partner to identify the external structues. • DO NOT OPEN THE BAG with your squid in it…we will deal with that mess tomorrow. • Put your names on the bag so you get the same one tomorrow. • You should be able to complete the following sections of Part 1: – 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 • At the end of class, put your squid back (which should still be in the sealed bag) into the 5 th period box. • If you finish early, read through the procedure for tomorrow so you can get started right away!
