Square in Rome ROME ITALY Roma, Italy "City of the Soul" was the epithet

Square in Rome ROME ITALY Roma, Italy "City of the Soul" was the epithet Lord Byron gave to Rome. Poetic hyperbole perhaps, but the description still strikes a chord in visitors to the city. Though less efficient and sophisticated than Milan, less picturesque and well preserved than Florence or Venice. Rome remains, in Thomas Hardy's words, "Time's central city". The history of Rome goes back about three thousand years. It is one of the oldest and most important cities in the world. Latin, which has its origins in Rome, has dominated cultures for two thousand years; law born in Rome has inspired Western law codes; art and Roman architectural styles have been used as models for centuries in the most advance countries. Rome has no equal in the history of Western world. For centuries, Rome has been called the Eternal City, a title earned through its importance as one of the great capital of the Roman Empire and as the world center of the Roman Catholic churches. Since 1871 it has been the capital of united Italy.

The Temple of God Medieval Sourcebook: Augustine (354 -430): The City of God: excerpts on the Two Cities St. Augustine (354 -430) is the most important of the Latin Church Fathers. His work formed the foundation for much of what would become Western Christendom. He was born Tagaste in North Africa and became bishop of the city of Hippo. His other writings include Confessions, the first autobiography in the West. He began writing The City of God in 410, after Alaric and the Vandals had sacked Rome. Many pagans blamed the conversion of the empire to Christianity for this calamity. Augustine tried to defend the Church by tracing the history of two cities or states from the beginning of the world. Jerome (340 -420) “ The brightest light on the whole earth was extinguished…. The Roman Empire was deprived of its head…. The whole world perished in one city. “

Ron Abel 1974 St. Peter’s Basilica is regarded by 659 million (2005, 1. 5 billion) Roman Catholics as the temple of God – as Christ’s seat in the “ visible church”. Picart, regarded as an authority on Roman Catholic ceremony, described the adoration of the pope with the following statement: “He the pope presides in the temple of the Lord. There is great significance to the words “sitteth in the temple of God”. The pope takes his seat in the temple of God, when gorgeously arrayed, he is carried on the shoulders of his cardinals to the papal chair. It is from this chair only, in this temple only, that ex cathedra “infallible” pronouncements are made by the pope.

Is Rome or Jerusalem The Eternal City? Ps 48: 2 Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. 8 ¶ As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah. Isa 59: 20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD. Isa 60: 1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. 4 Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side. 10 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee. 11 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought. 14 The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel. 15 ¶ Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.
