John 6: 1 -14 Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand 6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat? ” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many? ” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down. ” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted. ” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world. ”
Giving sacrificially in love
Closing prayer Generous and loving Father. You have made the world and filled it with all we need. We thank you for all we have been blessed with, for the unconditional love you have shown us through your son, our Lord Jesus Christ and for the life giving bible. We thank you for always loving us and guiding us, even when we may not have known you were. You are truly almighty and yet you love us unconditionally despite our sins and your loving always guides us ever near you. Touch my heart Lord so I can feel compassion for others and I may love them as you have loved us and break it a thousand times rather than be hardened the once. Lord bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain rejection and starvation and war, so we may reach out our hands with so much we have, to comfort them and turn their pain into joy. Touch my mind Lord so I have the wisdom to see your guiding love and give thanks for all that you have given me Give me courage Lord to always do what is right, what is your will, and not mine. Our lives are yours Lord, Guide us and teach us to be ever grateful for those gifts and to use them to serve you.
Closing prayer Almighty God, we pray for all the places in our world that are being affected by the changing climate, places where crops fail and abundant harvests are but a memory. Lord, we ask you to help us to learn how to live sustainably for the benefit of people living in poverty. Gracious Jesus, we pray for all those who will go to bed hungry tonight. Help us, Lord, to have compassion for the hungry. Give us grace to meet the needs of our broken world in your name. Holy Spirit, equip and empower us as your global church. We pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ, in the church in Chad. We pray that you will give them courage and strength. Almighty Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we pray you will help us act on behalf of people who are hungry in this world. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen
