Observation Assessment One of the assessments that Sports Leaders undertake is to be observed while leading a minimum of three sessions. These sessions should be for different activities and have detailed session plans completed for each. The assessment form (to be completed by the observer) is on p. 13 of the LER.
Practical Observation Form Consider the performance criteria and ensure each criteria is known and understood.

Performance Criteria #1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 can all be planned for to ensure the best possible chance of passing this assessment. Consider each of these criteria and plan for them in each of your 3 sessions.
1. Start the session effectively COPY THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH A session should always be started by explaining the aims of the session, laying down any ground rules (criteria #6) and explaining the warm-up.
3. Use at least 3 different verbal communication methods COPY THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH Verbal communication methods can include: � Talking � Shouting � Whistling � Explaining � Encouraging � Instructing � Correcting � Individual feedback � Group feedback
4. Use at least 3 different nonverbal communication methods COPY THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH Non-verbal communication methods can include: � Hand gestures � Facial expressions � Eye movements � Body language � Posture � Distance from participants � Modelling
5. Use at least 3 motivational methods COPY THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH Motivational methods can include: � Positive atmosphere � Setting targets � Recognising achievements � Providing incentives � Share aims � Steps to success � Encouraging � Challenging
6. Set and enforce at least 3 ground rules in an activity COPY THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH Rules can be activity-dependant but general ones can include: � Don’t talk while coach is talking � Encourage one another � Stop on whistle � Work together � Don’t play with equipment during instructions
7. Adapt the session effectively in line with the needs of the participant(s) COPY THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH Activities or practices can be adapted in the following ways: � Add/remove rules � Simplify rules � Use different equipment � Changing playing numbers � Easier/harder aims
8. Conduct an appropriate cool down COPY THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH Cool downs are a kind of reverse warm-up at the end of a session. It is an easier exercise and stretches following a session. For example: � Jog around gym, slowing to walk � Three simple stretches
Task 1 Working on your own, Plan for how you will meet each of these performance criteria in your 3 sessions. You must met each criteria once within the three sessions.
