• Today the Paralympic Games is the biggest multi-sport event for disabled athletes in the world. Participation spans 160 countries and covers six classification groups from those with spinal cord injuries to the visually impaired. The Paralympics have grown from the Stoke Mandeville Games for the Paralyzed. NEXT

History • In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organised a sports competition involving World War II veterans with a spinal cordrelated injury in Stoke Mandeville, England. • The founder of these games was one of the most eminent specialists for spinal cord injuries, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann. He started work at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in 1944, where he faced the possibility of receiving large numbers of wounded soldiers. But, medical issues were not on top of the list of his worries. A far bigger concern was how to overcome the widely held belief, both within the medical profession and among the public, that patients, once they had been paralyzed, faced a pointless future and could never be reintegrated into society. • The Paralympic Games have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games. Since the 1988 Seoul Summer Games and the 1992 Albertville Winter Games, they have also taken place at the same venues as the Olympic Games. MENU

Symbol • It’s everywhere in London at the moment, the rather odd Paralympic Games symbol. The word odd seems appropriate, as it is neither one thing nor another, neither balanced, impressive nor very well thought out, but at the same time blandly inoffensive and comfortably familiar… NEXT

• The online blurb tells me that it was created by Scholz & Friends Agency in April 2003, and is composed of three agitos, agito meaning “I move” in Latin. The three colours, red, blue and green represent those most commonly found on the various flags of the world, whilst the three swooshes (no connection to Nike obviously!) encircle a centre point that symbolises the bringing together of the athletes to compete. Sport • Adaptive rowing is a sport for people with disabilities who meet the criteria for classification. Currently adaptive rowing cultivated in 24 countries, the overall management is carried out by the International Federation of rowing. At the Paralympic games adaptive rowing competition was held for the first time in 2008, in Beijing, where Ludmila Volchek won a silver medal on the boat alone. NEXT

• Basketball in wheelchairs began to develop in the USA in 1945 by veterans of the Second World war. Since then, this sport has been widely developed in the world, was first presented at the Paralympic games in 1960 in Rome and is cultivated in 100 countries around the world. Sport created for athletes who due to disability are not able to run and jump. Men's and women's teams consist of 5 players on each side, dimensions of the area and the height of the baskets is the same as in NEXT regular basketball.

• Judo competitions are held among men and women of the visually impaired in different weight categories. At the Paralympics men first competed in Seoul in 1988, women in Athens in 2004. Also international tournaments, regional Championships and world Championships. NEXT

• Cross-country skiing for the first time entered the program at the Winter Paralympic games in 1976 in Sweden. In competitions attended by persons with disabilities of the musculoskeletal system and the visually impaired. Depending on the degree of disability athletes compete on sleds ( a chair equipped with a pair of skis ) or on artificial limbs. The visually impaired overcome the distance with NEXT the seeing leader.

• Since the Paralympic games in 1960, swimming is considered one of the top sports in the program. Athletes compete in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley. In 2009, the swimming has evolved in over 80 countries, among men and women with disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the visually impaired. NEXT

• Wheelchair dancing originated in Sweden in 1968 for the rehabilitation and recreation of disabled persons. Very soon this sport has become quite popular, especially in Sweden. The first competitions, which were attended by 30 couples was held in 1975, and in 1977 was the first international tournament. In 1998 he MENU organized the first world championship, it took place in Tokyo.
