Oystermouth Castle, Mumbles Just a few miles away from Swansea University’s Singleton Park Campus, in the small fishing village of Mumbles, you’ll find this 12 th century castle ruins. From the top of the hill, overlooking Swansea Bay, the castle is said to be haunted by the wounded lady. The woman wears a white robe and cries in pain and anguish in the grounds of the castle during the night. Those unfortunate enough to see her are left utterly petrified for days. It is thought she is a servant who was whipped to death at a whipping post by one of the Lords of Gower centuries ago. The ancient whipping post can still be seen in the castle’s dark, desolate dungeon to this day. Others say she was killed in a “murder hole” during a battle. Murder holes were used by soldiers to pour boiling water and oil on attackers below. A construction worker was tapped on the shoulder by an unseen presence when trying to reopen a sealed murder hole. . . Find out more: www. swansea. gov. uk/oystermouthcastle
Pennard Castle, The Gower Another local castle linked with tales of ghosts and magic is Pennard Castle. Situated in the heart of the Gower, this castle ruin stands at top a steep, imposing cliff and has great views over Three Cliffs Bay. On a sunny day the ruins are beautiful, but at night, this changes! The castle is said to appeared overnight by magic and is haunted by the ghost of a terrible winged witch called Gwrach-Y-Rhibyn! She puts a curse on anyone brave (or foolish) enough to spend a night sleeping within the crumbling castle walls. The site is also connected to the Fairy Folk who engulfed the castle in sand as a punishment for the ancient Lord of the Castle who threated them with a sword. The Old Refectory, Rhossili A few miles from Swansea lies Rhossili Bay, the most westerly tip of The Gower Peninsula. It is one of the most haunted and spooky places in Gower. Above the beach sits the Old Rectory, built around 1850. A square, white building with nothing else around it, isolated completely. The Rectory is haunted by something very unpleasant which is said to emerge from the sea, climb up the bank and enter this building late at night. Another story includes the appearance of a couple dressed in 16 th century clothing. However, apart from their clothing, these monsters are described as having thick, grey skin and are not human. In the Old Rectory, people have reported feeling sudden temperature drops and hearing a disembodied voice stating, "Why don't you turn around and look at me? "
Rhossili Bay, The Gower It isn’t just the Old Rectory that is haunted in Rhossili – the beach itself has been the sightings of numerous ghosts and unexplained apparitions… The ghost of a long-dead vicar called Reverend John Ponsonby. It is said that he rides a ghoulish horse up and down the beach on dark nights dressed in black. He seems to prefer dark nights when the wind howls. Another spirit who also enjoys haunting this beach is that of Squire Mansell, who drives a coach with four black horses along the sand. He disappears at sunrise, leaving only faint tracks in the sand for holiday makers to find… Find out more: www. swansea. gov. uk/rhossil
Margam Castle is situated in the stunning Margam Country Park, not far from Swansea University’s Bay Campus. It is one of the most haunted places in South Wales, it is packed full of ghosts and stories of myth and magic! The castle was completed 1840 but the site has been occupied for 4000 years and used to be the site of a monastery which was dissolved in the 16 th century. One frequently encountered spirit is said to be Robert Scott a gamekeeper who worked at the castle for many years until he was murdered by a poacher. His spirit haunts the grounds today, consumed with rage over his unjust killing! Robert Scott has been seen going up the gothic staircase leading to the castle on numerous occasions. He is not a shy ghost as his presence has come forward regularly with psychic investigators who have tried to make contact with him.
Margam Castle continued Unseen children can be heard giggled throughout the long corridors and ornate rooms of the family areas. Many reports have been made by guests seeing children in Victorian clothes drifting in and out of doorways and cheekily moving objects. At night, the castle's security guards have reported the noise of footsteps running around and chattering voices with no sign of anyone else in the building… Recently, the high reports of paranormal activity have attracted psychic investigators from across the globe to South Wales. They have reported cold spots and floating orbs in the castle which are frighteningly abundant. This castle is flushed with psychic energy. Rocks have been thrown by spirits during séances when people have tried to speak to the ghosts. Robert Scott, the angry murdered groundskeeper, is said to have slammed doors and hurled objects.
