Community Update December 2018
A Quick Level Set: Tungsten Fabric Overview
What is Tungsten Fabric? Tungsten Fabric is an open source multi-cloud, multi-stack software-defined networking (SDN) platform. It is built to meet the critical performance and security standards of Tier One service providers and enterprises with global operations, whether they’re using public cloud, operating their own infrastructure, or both. Tungsten Fabric is hardened, production-proven, massively scalable, and supported by a growing community of developers and users.
Mission Build the world’s most ubiquitous, easy-to-use, scalable, secure, and cloud-grade SDN stack, providing a network fabric connecting all environments, all clouds, all people. https: //tungsten. io/

Where we are… How far we’ve come
Past, present, and future v 1 v 2 v 3 • Docker & ESXi runtime support • VMware v. Sphere support • DPDK v. Router • Prototype with Kubernetes v 1. 1 v 4 v 5+ • Kubernetes and CNI support • Open. Shift support • Containerize project • New install w/ Ansible or Helm • Open. Stack networking at scale • Node-port service chaining • Security focus • NFV service chaining • Improve analytics with Kafka • Multicloud deployability • Analytics collection/querying • LBaa. S • Switching fabric focus • REST API and GUI • To. R switch as OVSDB gateway • Declarative network as code
Tungsten Fabric 2018 summary • Focus on completing migration to LF/LFN • Satisfy LFN TAC “speeds and feeds” data requirements • Update/cleanup community processes • Push Juniper and LF on transition checklist • Coordinate with LFN on budget and marketing planning, especially going into 2019 • Acclimate to new environment (LF/LFN)
State of the project • Finalizing transition to LF/LFN – – Code transition (Dec 2018) Bugs, Code reviews (Dec 2018) Build/release process (January 2019) LFN (re)induction with TAC (Dec 2018) – https: //tungstenfabric. github. io/website/Tungsten-Fabric-Architecture. html • Released 5. 0. 2 in November 2018 • Released updated Tungsten specific architecture doc: • Launched meetup evangelism program (Mar ‘ 18)
Upcoming milestones • • Dec 2018: TSC elections January 2019: Ship 5. 1 release H 2’ 2019: Ship 6. x major release Marketing events: Open. Stack Summits, ONS summits, Kubecons, etc.
2018 successes • Joined LFN • Shipped 5. 0, 5. 0. 1, 5. 0. 2, and soon 5. 1 (01/15/19 target) • Pioneered the LFN TAC induction process: – First outside project to join LFN – Effectively pushed TAC to figure out induction process – Provided detailed “speeds and feeds” on TF • Launched evangelism program – Grass-roots, meetup-centric • Major events: – Kubecon Shanghai & Seattle, GNTC (Nanjing), Open. Stack Summits (Vancouver, Berlin), ONS events (US, Europe)
2018 successes – meetups vs. Carbide launches
Grassroots marketing • 29 Meetups in 2018, 19 unique cities, across 7 countries, introducing TF to ~1, 380 people • More than 135 launches of the Carbide evaluation environment – Tungsten Fabric + Kubernetes on AWS – configure and launch in 15 mins – https: //tungsten. io/start/
Project challenges • Transition from Juniper to LF harder than expected: – Zuul vs. Jenkins (LF can’t support Zuul) – Renaming and moving of repos (tricky migration) – Migrating from launchpad to Jira (LF supports Jira not LP) • Friction at marketing events – speakers need to buy seperate conference passes • Cross-project representation in booths is lacking • LF SDN classes need to include Tungsten Fabric • LF focus is large events; little or no support for grassroots, meetups-centric marketing efforts
2019 priorities 1. By end of Q 1: no more Juniper dependency 2. Expand developer base 3. Increase focus on China a. Right tools for Chinese developers and end-users b. Greater engagement via meetups and events c. Explain why v. Router vs. OVS 4. Expand into Kubernetes ecosystem 5. Linux standard dataplane: e. BPF-based v. Router a. Show value vs. Calico b. Make TF easy to use for k 8 s deployments c. Explain and show TF+service mesh value
Cross-project collaboration initiatives • • Ongoing DPDK support and integration Evaluating FD. io/VPP and TF integration Initiative to create v. Router on e. BPF option Multiple Akraino Edge integration blueprints Starling. X integration Creation of Open. Stack ML 2 driver ONAP/OPNFV testing integration Ongoing integration with various Open. Stack distros
