Dynamic hand-based PIP extension splint – high profile Splint intended to put extension force on PIP joints but instead of moving PIP joints it is over extending the more flexible MCP joints. Splint needs an MCP bar to block MCP hyperextension.
Pictures from Fess & Philips Hand Splinting Principles & Methods, 2 nd Edition. Correction is on the right:
MA
Low-profile dynamic PIP extension (with MCP block) High-profile dynamic MCP extension Static PIP extension splint (joint-jack) Low-profile dynamic MCP flexion
Wrist cock-up with dynamic finger extension for radial nerve injury
Forearm based dynamic PIP extension splint w/ MCP block
Clamdigger splint maintaining MCP flexion at 90 deg to avoid MCP extension contracture when metacarpal fx or prox phal. Fx need immobilization
Same thing on ulnar side when either metacarpal or prox phal fx occurs in digits 4 or 5.
Failure to achieve MCP flexion in immobilization results in MCP extension contracture due to shortening of MCP collateral ligaments.
Forearm based dynamic MCP flexion splint used when improper immobilization (previous splint) results in MCP extension contracture
Dorsal shell splint to apply traction (Kleinert) to FDP tendon following repair of laceration; this done to keep tendon in slack to heal.
