Scope of practice - Psychotherapy • See 5 CRPO Competencies • The practice of psychotherapy is the assessment and treatment of cognitive, emotional or behavioural disturbances by psychotherapeutic means, delivered through a therapeutic relationship based primarily on verbal or nonverbal communication. See Psychotherapy Act, 2007, section 3.
CASC and CRPO Competencies, Scopes of Practice • 10 CASC Competencies • 5 CRPO Competencies Except for some slight areas of difference these sets of competencies and scopes of practice can be considered as parallel and/or highly overlapping. The issue of language is key. - E. g. “treatment” vs “interventions, ” “care planning”

Exceptions & Distinctions Exceptions • Helping someone in an emergency • Helping someone with the activities of daily living • Treating by prayer or spiritual means according to the tenets of one’s religion Distinctions • “The practice of psychotherapy is distinct from both counselling, where the focus is on the provision of information, advice-giving, encouragement and instruction, and spiritual counselling, which is counselling related to religion or faith-based beliefs. ” HPRAC: New Directions, 2006; Chapter 7, Regulation of Psychotherapy, p. 208. The College is not regulating counsellors or counselling. However, psychotherapy and counselling can be highly interrelated.
CASC Members and CRPO • Who can join? • Those work can be considered to fall within the scope of practice of “psychotherapy” as defined by CRPO. • Who must join? Those who wish to use the title “psychotherapist”. • Those work includes the controlled act of psychotherapy. Ie. Some CASC members • • You Decide • Self regulating College, therefore it is up to members/potential members to discern where their practice falls and to decide. • Whether or not one is in the CRPO, one only practises within the field that one is trained in.
