Spencer Stuckey The Effects of Education Funding and College Graduation Rates
Research Questions • Which country spends the most on education funding? • Does the GDP per capita effect government funding? • Does the amount of funding directly correlate to the graduation rates?
Literature Review • According to Liang Zhang, when the government funds colleges, the graduation rates for said university will increase when all other factors are held equal. During her study, a 10% increase in funding resulted in a 0. 64% increase in graduation rates. Sociologist want to research this topic because college graduation plays several roles in other aspects in society such as crime rates. This research is also important to Sociologist because they can find if government funding of college education is the most efficient way to promote college education.

Data Analysis i. Data was downloaded from multiple sites i. Had to comb through data to get years and countries to match using filter function
Data Analysis Continued I. Highlighted “Country” & “Direct Expenditures By Percent GDP” -> Insert -> Bar Graph
Data Analysis Continued I. Next, I created a bar graph to compare GDP per capita and education funding by percent GDP spent. II. First Had to turn GDP to a unit of “ 10’s of Thousands” -> =GDP*(0. 0001) III. Did this to have both variables in same unit values
Data Analysis Continued
Data Analysis Continued • Compare amount of funding and graduation percent • Used percent of 25 -64 year olds with college degree – Did this because that is the age range of the work force
Data Analysis Continued • To do this: Turn percent of college grads to a percent in tens unit -> Select Country, Percent GDP on Education, and Percent College Grad. > Insert side by side bar graph
Data Analysis Continued
Findings • Iceland spends highest percent GDP on education: 7% • Czech Republic is lowest with: 4. 1% • The lower percent of GDP spent, the less GDP the country has, and vice versa but not an exact correlation • The percent GDP spent does influence percent of college graduates, but not an exact correlation
