Spelling Sort 10 Adding the Suffix -ation
Adding –ation with no spelling change n Adding the suffix –ation to some words requires no spelling change to the base word.
Tempt/Temptation n To make you want something really bad. Don’t try to tempt me with that chocolate cake! The temptation was too great, so I ate the whole slice!
Plant/Plantation n To put into the ground in order to grow something. The cotton plant was important to the South during the Civil War period. A Cotton Plantation could grow thousands of pounds of cotton per year.
Consider/Consideration n To think about others and what is best for them. You need to consider other people’s health when you sneeze. Show consideration for others by covering your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing.
Inform/Information n To give people directions or instructions. The man is handing out flyers to inform the community of tonight’s meeting. What kind of information will be discussed at the meeting?
Tax/Taxation n Money paid for goods, services, and on income. Remember you have to pay tax on the clothes you buy. Taxation of the people helps provide the government with money to run our country.
Adding –ation to words ending in e n When a word ends in e, you must drop the e before adding the suffix –ation.
Quote/Quotation n Repeating something word for word that another person has said. Abraham Lincoln’s quote on freedom is inspiring. When using a quote in a sentence it should have quotation marks.
Starve/Starvation n To be very hungry. If you don’t feed the children, they will starve! Sally Lou said, “I am dying of starvation over here!”
Imagine/Imagination n To create an image in your mind. I like to look at the clouds and imagine that I see an airplane. It takes a lot of imagination to see things in the clouds.
Memorize/Memorization n To put something into your mind. You need to memorize your multiplication tables for math. Memorization of multiplication tables is not hard.
Organize/Organization n To put things in order. How am I going to organize this mess? I guess that organization skills are not my cup of tea!
