SPEED It is the ability to perform movement
SPEED It is the ability to perform movement at faster rate. In other words, it is the ability to move as fast as possible. Speed is the quickness of the movement of limb, whether this be the legs of a runner or the arm of a shot putter. Speed is an integral part of every sport and can be expressed as any one of a combination of maximum speed, explosive strength, speed, endurance.
SPEED Speed, like strength and endurance, is a conditional ability. It has a complex nature as it depends to a considerable extent on the central nervous system. Speed performance cannot be improved to considerable extent as is the case in strength and endurance.
SPEED Due to high role of coordinative process in a speed performance the improvement of speed has to be done with specific means and methods. Speed ability should not be equated with mechanical speed which is equal to the distance covered per unit of time. In several sports with action no distance is covered at all.
SPEED Speed ability primarily signifies the ability to execute motor movements with high speed. These moments may be cyclic or a acyclic in nature. Cyclic sports are those in which a single movement is repeated over and over again, such as rowing, running or riding a bicycle. Acyclic sports are those in which every action requires a different type of movement, rather than repeating the same movement in a cycle. Wrestling, fencing and gymnastics are examples of acyclic sports.
SPEED From general point of view we can have five types of speed abilities. 1 Reaction ability 2 Movement speed 3 Acceleration ability 4 Locomotor ability 5 Speed endurance
SPEED Reaction ability: It is the ability to react effectively and quickly to a signal. In sports signals can be of different type e. g. visual, tactile (touch), acoustic (audio). Depending on the degree of complexity of the reaction required the reaction ability can be further differentiated into simple and complex reaction ability.
SPEED Movement speed: It is the ability to do a single Movement in minimum of time. Movement speed is of high relevance in cyclic sports. In cyclic sports it is important in the initial phase (e. g. start moment) or in some phases during the total period of cyclic activity e. g. turns in swimming and hurdle clearance in hurdle event.
SPEED Acceleration ability It is the ability to achieve high speed of locomotion from a stationary position or from a slow moving position. Acceleration ability depends to a great extent on explosive strength, technique and moment of frequency. Performance in sprint events are determined to a great extent by acceleration ability.
SPEED Acceleration ability is also of crucial importance in all team games and racket sports where high running speed are to be achieved over for distance.
SPEED Loco motorability It is the ability to maintain maximum speed of locomotion for maximum possible duration or distance. Loco motor ability is important in only a few Sports event example 100 m. and 200 m. in track and field. Short sprints in track cycling and speed skating, swimming, rowing etc.
SPEED Loco motor ability is not of much importance in all event that last in more than 40 sec. On the other hand in these sports speed endurance is of high importance. It depends on technique, ability to relax and explosive strength
SPEED Speed Endurance: Speed endurance is a combination of speed and endurance abilities. It is one's ability to run at maximum or near maximum speed for a sustained period of time. Players of football or hockey can take benefit from speed endurance.
