Speech techniques are used to gain the audience’s attention, to emphasise points and to make a speech more memorable/ effective/ persuasive - Verbal Language Features - Delivery Techniques We are going to look at several techniques often used in effective speeches. Each technique will be defined and then we will look at an example. You will then think about the purpose/effect of each technique.

Rhetorical Question What is it? : a question used for dramatic effect that doesn’t

Rhetorical Question What is it? : a question used for dramatic effect that doesn’t require an answer Example: “When will they learn? ” Why might this be used in a speech? Direct Address What is it? : the use of personal pronouns (‘you’ and ‘we’) or names of people or communities (e. g. ‘Taine’ or ‘Gisborne’) to directly speak to/refer to the audience Example: “We cannot go on like this any longer!” Why might this be used in a speech?

Anecdotes What is it? : Little stories that make a point Example: “I was

Anecdotes What is it? : Little stories that make a point Example: “I was walking down the street yesterday and saw an old lady who needed to cross the road. But everyone who walked past was ignoring her. ” Why might this be used in a speech? Humour What is it? : Provoking laughter or providing amusement Example: “Sometimes my life is like being on the ‘Ben and Jono at Ten’ show!” Why might this be used in a speech?

Repetition What is it? : Repeating of words or phrases within a speech Example:

I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be” Why might this be used in a speech? Using evidence/examples What is it? : Providing supporting evidence for your point (e. g. statistics, personal experience) Example: “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that the cost of teenager car accidents is over $40 billion a year – clearly showing that raising the driving age is necessary” Why might this be used in a speech?

Emotive Language What is it? : Words which have very strong connotations Example: “They

Common Experience What is it? Using an common event or occurrence to make a point Example: “Have you ever waited for the bus on a Friday afternoon when it’s pouring with rain? The bus is late and all you want to do is get home and watch T. V!. . . ”
