WHAT IS IT • Speech impairment is a communication disorder that can range from stuttering, lisps, and more. • There are 5 common types of speech impairment.
THE TYPES OF SPEECH IMPAIRMENTS • One disorder is called Articulation disorder; this disorder makes a child substitute sounds for example: wabbit instead of rabbit. • Another disorder is called Apraxia of Speech this disorder affects the programing system for speech processing. This causes stuttering because the person may know what they want to say, but it may come out differently then planned.
CAUSES OF SPEECH IMPAIRMENTS • In most cases the main cause for speech impairments is unknown, however factors such as hearing loss, brain injury, and drug abuse have been linked to cause speech impairment.
SPEECH IMPAIRMENT DIAGNOSIS AND SYMPTOMS • The Denver articulation screening examination is the commonly used test for diagnosing speech impairments. • This evaluates the clarity when pronouncing words and provides exercises to asses a persons’ speech. • Symptoms include stuttering, hesitating, placing words in the wrong order, and even slurred speech. Symptoms vary on the disorder
WHAT PROBLEMS CAN THEY CAUSE • With a person that has a difficulty with speech regardless the disorder they may have trouble finding a job. • When applying for a job the first thing that they observe is your speech. • Customer service jobs and jobs the requires frequent communication with customers is not suitable for people with speech disorder. • People with speech disorders have a difficult time being successful because of their difficult task of finding a job.
